suffix A suffix is a syllable added to the end of a word that will change its meaning and form a new word. suffix ly The suffix ly means “in a certain way”. Quickly- means in a quick way. quickly The doctor quickly ran to the hospital.

Sadly means in a sad way. Badly means in a bad way. Fondly means in a fond way. Safely means in a safe way.

Here are some more ly words. slowly dimly gladly gravely tamely grandly limply lately crisply closely safely timely

briefly highly rapidly strictly eagerly rudely highly smartly loudly softly sharply honestly

In words that end in y, the y is changed to an I before adding ly. merry - merrilyhappy - happily angry - angrilybusy - busily lazy - lazilyeery - eerily

Remember that if a word ends in l you still add the ly. final - finallyreal - really careful - carefullythankful - thankfully gradual -graduallyliteral - literally

Words that end with consonant + le, you drop the e then add y. terrible - terriblynoble - nobly horrible - horriblyidle - idly

Adverbs can describe other adverbs, too. Adverbs extremely Luke spoke extremely quietly. Extremely tells how quietly Luke spoke. very Shawn very sadly said good bye. Very tells how sadly Shawn said good bye.

Comparatives Adverbs Adverbs can be used to make comparisons. Some adverbs follow the same rules as adjectives do. taller Katherine grew taller than Jane. fastest That dog ran fastest of all the dogs.

Comparatives Adverbs To make comparisons using adverbs that end in ly, use the words more and most. more slowly My aunt read the book more slowly than my uncle. more beautifully Your sister sang more beautifully than the other singers.
