CULTURA: CAPÍTULO 1B

Frida Kahlo ( ) She is one of the best known Mexican painters. Frida had a German father and Mexican mother. She walked with a limp due to a childhood illness. She grew up in a house that later became known as La casa azul (The Blue House), which is now a museum to honor Frida and her work.

El accidente When Frida was 18 years old she was involved in a horrible bus accident. For the rest of her life, Frida would continue to deal with health issues due to this accident.

Frida began painting while she recovered from the accident. During her lifetime, she painted over fifty self-portraits!

Marriage and Politics Frida was married to Diego Rivera, another famous Mexican artist. Frida became famous for her art and politics. She was a communist, but she is also known as a feminist. Her work celebrates Mexican culture and the history of the indigenous people. It also shows women’s issues and struggles.

Símon Bolívar He was born in Venezuela into a creole family. He studied in Spain during a time when philosophers and scholars spoke of independence. Símon returned to Venezuela with the idea of breaking free from Spain’s control.

Gran Colombia y más His revolution was successful and Símon eventually became the president of Gran Colombia from Gran Colombia included: Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Panama, parts of Peru, Guyana and Brazil. Over time, Símon also conquered Ecuador, and Bolivia (which was named after him). He is known as el Libertador (the Liberator).

Huipil Huipil is the word for the colorful, hand-woven, square-cut blouse or dress worn by female descendants of the Maya. It is also the most common garment for indigenous women. The color, design, and style of weaving are unique to each huipil and identify the background and specific village of the weaver.

Huipil While huipil have a strong cultural and historical connection, they have also become apart of popular culture. Frida Kahlo wearing a huipil
