Bacterial STIs Zach Klapwald

Sexually Transmitted Infections: These are diseases that are primarily contracted through sexual activity. They can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites. This presentation will focus on those caused by bacteria. Bacteria: These microscopic organisms are the cause of all bacterial STIs. While many bacteria are harmless, some species cause disease.

Syphilis This STI is caused by the Treponema pallidum bacteria. It has three stages: painless ulcers, a sore throat and lymph glands, and finally a rash appears. It can be cured with an antibacterial injection.

Gonorrhea A highly contagious Bacterial STI that is caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae. The main symptom is an abnormal discharge from the sex organs. It can be cured if it is caught early.

Chlamydia The most commonly contracted bacterial STI. Some symptoms are bleeding while urinating and a burning of the gonads. Only 30% of those infected show any symptoms, making diagnosis difficult.

Pelvic inflammatory disease This condition results from an untreated bacterial STI and causes fever, pelvic pain, and other symptoms. Diagnosis is difficult because several symptoms or none can develop. It can be treated with an extensive period of antibiotic therapy.

Urinary Tract Infection This bacterial STI causes frequent and painful urination. If it goes untreated, it can lead to life-threatening kidney problems. Treatment involves one or more antibiotics.

Chancroid A Bacterial STI that causes highly painful ulcers to appear in the groin area. It can eventually cause the destruction of male genitalia. Chancroid can be treated with antibacterial injections.

Toxic Shock Syndrome An extremely rare STI that infects only about 12 Americans per year. It attacks internal organs and causes them to stop functioning. Toxic Shock Syndrome has no cure and is usually fatal.

Antibiotics Antibiotics are important medicines that serve as our most effective weapon against disease causing bacteria. They can cure most bacterial STIs. They are ineffective against diseases not caused by bacteria.

Prevention Abstinence: Having no sex is, obviously, the best way to prevent contraction of any sexually transmitted diseases. Condoms: They were originally invented for contraception, but condoms can also prevent most STIs.
