Collection of SY Special Education Parent Survey  Why do we conduct the parent survey?  The Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) is mandated to meet State Performance Plan (SPP) indicators targets set forth in the Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).  One of the indicators is Indicator 8, percent of parents with a child receiving special education services who report that schools facilitated parent involvement as a means of improving services and results for children with disabilities.  BIE reports annually to the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) the BIE schools performance in meeting the SPP target for indicator 8 target in the Annual Performance Report (APR).  The BIE collects reporting data for indicator 8 from parents or guardians of students with disabilities from the parent survey.  The results from the Special Education Parent Survey help guide BIE’s efforts in improving services to children with disabilities and provide ideas to increase parent involvement in the process at both the State Education Agency (SEA) and Local Education Agency(LEA) – schools, levels.

SY Special Education Parent Survey  BIE-DPA is requesting all parents and guardians of students with disabilities that received special education and related services at a BIE funded school during school year to complete a parent survey  In order for the BIE to get reliable results, all schools must participate and all of the parents must have been given the opportunity to respond to this survey.

SY Special Education Parent Survey  Schools should provide opportunities to assist parents with completion of the survey.  Provide parents access to computers, along with assistance from school personnel to access and complete the survey.  Set up a table during school public gathering and explain to parents the purpose of the survey and assist with completion of the survey.  When scheduling IEP meetings, ask parents ahead of time if they could spend extra time after the meeting to complete the survey with your assistance.  Make a follow-up contact with parents via a home visit or telephone contact to check progress in the completion of the survey and to offer assistance with completion of the survey.  Have interpreters available to orally interpret any part or all of the survey in a language the parents understand.

SY Special Education Parent Survey Thank you for your time and efforts in the collection of the Special Education Parent Survey.
