Design Basics

Standards MSENGR-TS-2 The students will develop an understanding of how the design process is used to develop a technological system. a) Identify the steps of the design process Question What is the process used to bring new products and systems to the marketplace? How can we begin thinking like designers?

Design Design is a creative planning process that leads to useful products and systems. There is no perfect design. Requirements for a design are made up of criteria and constraints. Design involves a set of steps that can be performed in different sequences and repeated when needed.

Design continued……………….. Brainstorming is a group problem- solving design process in which each person in the group presents his or her ideas in an open forum. Modeling, testing, evaluating, and modifying are used to transform ideas into practical solutions.

Design continued……………… Innovation often involves decreasing the overall capabilities of a product or system in order to increase its ability to perform a more narrow or specific task very efficiently. This process is called specialization of function. New products or systems can be developed to solve problems that can not be done without the help of technology.

The Engineering Design Process  Defining the Problem  Brainstorming a solution  Generating Ideas  Identifying Criteria  Exploring Possibilities  Selecting an Approach  Making a Model or Prototype  Testing and Evaluating the Design  Refining the Design

Reminder It is important to contribute to a group endeavor by offering useful ideas, supporting the effort of others and focusing on the task.

Think Tank: How can our group use the engineering design process to invent a solution to our chosen problem?
