Thanksgiving Project

Getting ready to eat!  Between now and Thanksgiving, we will create FunMat for your family dinner.

First… We have to decide what we want to have for Thanksgiving dinner. You have $100 (that is 100 imaginary CLICK dollars) to spend on groceries for your feast.

Let’s go shopping.  Amazon.com  Walmart.com  Target.com

Create a spreadsheet The document called, “Funmat_Budget” contains formulas that will do totals and tax for you! Open it on your computer Save it as, “Thanksgiving Budget”. It will look like this…

What will we buy?  Think of what you want to have for Thanksgiving dinner and type each item in a separate line.

How much does it cost?  Find the price of your food item on the next slide. If you don’t find what you want, use the price of something similar.

Making a Shopping List 1. Type your name in a large (but not too big) font in one of the cells. 2. Print your spreadsheet.

 End of day one

Making a menu 4. Open Microsoft Word  All FunMats have cool borders, so our will too. 5. Click on the Page Layout tab, then Page Borders.

Adding a border 6. You see three choices, Borders, Page Borders, and Shading. Select Page Borders.

Adding a border 7. Choose either Box or 3-D on the left.

Adding a border 8. Now decide if you want your border to be some kind of lines or pictures.  If you want lines, choose from the style menu. If you want pictures, choose from the art menu.

Adding a border 9. If you choose to have lines, now choose a color. 10. Click OK.

Now for the menu… 1. Click on the page layout tab 2. Click “Orientation” and choose “Landscape”

Now for the menu… 3. Now click on the columns button and make your FunMat two columns instead of just one.

So what are we eating? 4. In 28 point font type “Menu”. 5. Make “Menu” bold and underlined. 6. Press enter twice. 7. In 26 point font type “Appetizers”. 8. Make “Appetizers” italic but not bold or underlined. 9. Press enter once.

So what are we eating? 10. Select 22 point font. Press the bullet button and enter your appetizers, one for each line. 10. Repeat for Entrees and Sides and Desserts.

So what are we eating? 11. If you have room at the bottom of the row insert some pictures of food. You can find pictures in ClipArt. Remember to format your pics so that you can move them!  Now your menu should look like this.

12. Save your menu in your Student Number folder!  End of day two.

And now for the games!  We are going to make a Thanksgiving word find for our FunMat. 1. Let’s come up with some words that we will have in our word find. Use ten or more words.  Turkey  Stuffing  Pie  Pilgrim  Family …… 2. Copy these words onto your worksheet, make sure to spell them correctly!

Making a word find 2. Now open Microsoft Excel. 3. Click on the top left cell and highlight 8 columns (up to column h).

Making a word find 4. Click on Format, them Column, them Width.

Making a word find 5. In the box that pops up, change the width to 3 and press OK.  Now your spreadsheet is the right shape for a word find.

Making a word find 6. Now to make the grid for our word find, highlight through column h and down to row 10.

Making a word find 7. Click on the grid/borders button Then select this option, “All Borders”  Now your word find will look like this.

Making a word find. 8. Now enter your words into the grid (make sure your caps lock is on and you letters are centered).  Remember, you can go diagonally or backwards.

Making a word find 9. Now fill all of the empty spaces with random letters. So that your word find looks like this.

Making a word find 10. Highlight ONLY your word find.

Making a word find 11. Click edit and Copy. 12. Now open your FunMat word file.

Finishing the FunMat 13. Go to the very bottom of the first column and press enter until the cursor moves to the top of the second column. 14. In 28 point font type “Word Find”. 15. Make “Word Find” bold and underlined.

Finishing the FunMat 16. Press enter. 17. Click File and Paste to insert the word find. 18. Type each of the words to find below the word find, one for each line.

Finishing the FunMat 19. Press enter.  Now we will insert a maze. To do that: 1. In 22 point font type “Maze” and make it bold and underlined.

Finishing the FunMat 2. Search Google or similar for Thanksgiving mazes. 3. Choose the Maze and copy the maze to your FunMat. 4. Make your maze as large as you can, keeping it on the same page 5. Now you have a Thanksgiving FunMat! 6. You can choose other games too; such as, color me, connect the dots, and riddles!

Finish the Drill!  Fill in all “white space” with pictures  Make sure you name is somewhere on the FunMat.  Print in color, if available

Happy Thanksgiving  Give the FunMat to a special person on Thanksgiving!  They will love it!!!
