Welcome to TADCASTER EAST COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL

Benefits of Jolly Phonics approach Children learn all the sounds in the English language. Lots of reinforcement so the children enjoys lots of success. The links between reading and writing are made very early. Children are confident to have a go at writing their own words at an early stage. IT IS FUN and the children enjoy learning the actions, sounds and the letter formations.

When do the children start Jolly Phonics The children are given a gentle introduction to the sounds and actions when they join the Foundation Stage. Some of the practical activities may also be undertaken if the child is ready. The children become familiar with the characters and the stories.

5 Basic Skills that Jolly Phonics teaches are: 1. Learning the letter sounds 2. Letter formation 3. Blending 4. Identifying sounds in words 5. Tricky words

These are the letter sounds and the order that they are taught in.

At all times we stress the need for a correct pencil hold Tripod grip ‘Froggy legs’ movement

AT THE BEGINNING OF THE WEEK Recap all letters and sounds. Introduce new sounds through story. Practise actions and letter formations on board, in the air and on each others back. Blending- hearing the sounds in the word.

Towards the end of the week No new sound is introduced. All sounds are reinforced. The new stories are recapped. Rhythm games are played with the children. Names of letters and capital letters are taught.

During story sessions Throughout the week, at the end of the day children recap the weeks phonic work and show each other and the staff all that they can remember!

Word building When the children are confident with all their sounds they will be encouraged to use their knowledge to build words. d o g

Reading Tricky Words These are words that the children need to learn as they do not fit into the normal phonic pattern but occur frequently in reading and writing.

READING When the children are secure enough in their knowledge of the sounds and are able to blend them independently they will be ready to move on to our reading scheme. Songbirds is a phonic based scheme and is published by Oxford Reading Tree.

Helping at Home! YES PLEASE! Reading to your child remains important. Encourage your child to tell you the stories that introduce the letters and sounds. Sheets with pictures and sounds will come home for you to share with your child. Enjoy learning the sounds with your child.

Thank you for you time. As with anything else in our school if you are unsure please ask. We are here to help.
