“THIS IS MY INSTAGRAM”: SELF-EDITING, FEAR KEEP KIDS GLUED TO SOCIAL MEDIA PRESENTED BY: KIERRA TURNBULL

ARTICLE DETAILS Based on opinions and research from: Larry Borins (clinical social worker for teenagers) Jane Bailey and Valerie Steeves (researchers) Focuses mainly on research done on teenage girls Includes quotes of young girls interviewed by author Concludes with future effects of the overuse of social media

ARTICLE SUMMARY New culture of “self-surveillance” is creating an “anxious, superficial generation” Teenagers use platforms such as Facebook and Instagram to change their identity & feel connected to their peers which results in a constant need to edit oneself online (“self editing”) Use social media to show only what they want other people to see of them

ARTICLE SUMMARY CONT … Teens spend a great deal of time managing online personalities – the practice is similar to “the condition of cognitive distortion” which is a symptom “of depression and anxiety”. People with this condition compare themselves against others and only focus on their negative attributes The “happy chemical” dopamine is released in the brain whenever we receive a “like” or a notification on social media “FOMO” – Fear of Missing Out – Teens are using mobile devices and social media more often because they do not want to feel ‘out of the loop’

EFFECTS OF SOCIAL MEDIA USE: Teens will grow up to become “emotionally unavailable adults” Young people will lack interpersonal skills & lose the ability to read social cues Social Media Addiction

POSSIBLE PROBLEMS WITH ARTICLE: Phone usage and Social Media usage are referenced synonymously The article is entitled “…fear keep kids glued to social media” – but the article targets teenage girls only Teenage boys are not interviewed or mentioned in the article Does not mention anything positive about social media Outdated – similar studies have already been done pre-2015 Too broad for a short article mentions everything from “experimenting with identity” to “cyber bullying”

THANK YOU !
