Pervasive Computing Era

Computing Evolution

Ubiquitous Computing Mark Weiser, Xerox PARC 1988 “ Ubiquitous computing enhances computer use by making many computers available throughout the physical environment, but making them effectively invisible to the user. ” Source: Weiser, 1993a

Pervasive (Ubiquitous) Computing Vision “In the 21st century the technology revolution will move into the everyday, the small and the invisible…” “The most profound technologies are those that disappear. They weave themselves into the fabrics of everyday life until they are indistinguishable from it.” Mark Weiser (1952 –1999), XEROX PARC

What is Ubiquitous Computing? Ubiquitous computing (ubicomp) is a post-desktop model of human-computer interaction in which information processing has been thoroughly integrated into everyday objects and activities. As opposed to the desktop paradigm, in which a single user consciously engages a single device for a specialized purpose, someone "using" ubiquitous computing engages many computational devices and systems simultaneously, in the course of ordinary activities, and may not necessarily even be aware that they are doing so. ~from Wiki

Pervasive Computing Phase I  Small, cheap, mobile processors and sensors are in almost all everyday objects (smart object) on your body (“wearable computing”) embedded in the environment (“ambient intelligence”)

Smart Objects Real world objects are enriched with information processing capabilities Embedded processors –in everyday objects –small, cheap, lightweight Communication capability –wired or wireless –Self-organizing networking Sensors and actuators Location/situation/context awareness Interact with physical world Smart objects can process and remember pertinent events Smart objects can communicate with each other Smart objects have context-sensitive behavior
