BTEC First Diploma in Sport 6.3 Produce and implement an action plan to improve performance in a selected sport Action plans

BTEC First Diploma in Sport 6.3 Produce and implement an action plan to improve performance in a selected sport What is an action plan? An action plan is a set of goals that you set yourself – its aim is to improve your sporting performance. The goals are: short term medium term long term.

BTEC First Diploma in Sport 6.3 Produce and implement an action plan to improve performance in a selected sport Types of goals Short term – these are goals you set yourself over the next few days, e.g. to win your next match. Medium term – these are goals that you set over the next few months, e.g. to pass your First Diploma course in June! Long term – these are goals that you set over a number of years, e.g. to reach the Olympics in 2008.

BTEC First Diploma in Sport 6.3 Produce and implement an action plan to improve performance in a selected sport Setting goals Before you can set goals you need to: decide what your current strengths are decide what your current weaknesses are. Once you are aware of these, you will be able to set relevant goals for training and competition.

BTEC First Diploma in Sport 6.3 Produce and implement an action plan to improve performance in a selected sport Targets The targets you set must follow the S.M.A.R.T. principles. S – Specific M – Measurable A – Agreed R – Realistic T – Timed.

BTEC First Diploma in Sport 6.3 Produce and implement an action plan to improve performance in a selected sport S.M.A.R.T. targets Specific – your targets must relate to your chosen sport and to you. Measurable – you must be able to decide when you have achieved your target. Agreed – your targets must be agreed between you and your coach. Realistic – your targets must be goals that you can meet. Timed – your targets must have deadlines for completion!

BTEC First Diploma in Sport 6.3 Produce and implement an action plan to improve performance in a selected sport Factors affecting performance Consider all the various factors that might affect your performance. Which factors might have an affect on the goal you have set? For example, using the services of a physiotherapist to have an injury treated may be affected by: your finances your travel options your work or school commitments.

BTEC First Diploma in Sport 6.3 Produce and implement an action plan to improve performance in a selected sport Implementing your plan There are a variety of ways to implement a training plan. The most common is a training diary. Use this to record details of every training session, match or other involvement in your chosen activity. Remember to include: the day, date, time and location of the activity the content of the activity any factors affecting your performance, e.g. weather conditions, how you felt any feedback on your performance.

BTEC First Diploma in Sport 6.3 Produce and implement an action plan to improve performance in a selected sport Other things to record in your diary Details about the facilities you used. Details about the treatment you have received. Any feedback you have received on your performance from your coach or instructor. Any fitness tests you have undertaken (and results). Any mental training you have undertaken. Changes you have made to your diet (and whether they had an affect). Spending time ‘visualising’ a shot or match in your mind is an important tool to improve your confidence.

BTEC First Diploma in Sport 6.3 Produce and implement an action plan to improve performance in a selected sport Getting the most out of your action plan If you have the facilities, start a video diary. Review sessions with your coach or tutor at regular intervals. Assess your progress against your set targets. Check that you are on schedule. You may need to adjust your schedule if other factors, like illness or injury, set you back.
