BIO105K Biological Principles **** For BIO106K lab, please buy the lab manual at the bookstore and bring it to lab each time. ****

Instructor: Dr. David Champlin Office: 305D Science Building, Portland Office Phone: Office Hours: T,W,Th 1:00-2:00; or by appointment Required Text: Biological Science, 2 nd Ed., Scott Freeman, Prentice-Hall. This book is used for three courses (105K, 107, and 109). Course Prerequisites: The only requirements for this introductory course are that you have completed USM’s minimum proficiency requirements in writing and mathematics. Class meets: MW 10:15-11:30, room 303 Payson Smith Attendance is required.... but if I had a penny for every time he said "Ummmmm.. yeah" or "hmmmmm... right" lets just say I would be rich enough to not be in his or any classes. His tests are very hard. His lecture is about the big picture and the tests he expects you to know ever little detail. Not the best.

Grading: Please let me know anytime if you want to talk about your grade for any reason. Many students find there is a LOT of material covered in this course. Consequently, there is a good chance you will work harder in this class for a lower grade compared to your other courses at USM. After each exam, the distribution of scores for the class will be shown and letter grades assigned. Grades will be assigned based on your performance relative to the other students in the class and relative to the previous times I have taught this course. I attempt to position the breakpoints between letter grades based on natural clustering of student’s scores rather than artificially applying ten point intervals between grades. There will almost always be a few A’s, several B’s, several C’s, and some D’s and F’s. But the numbers of each may vary from class to class. Basis For Final Grade: The maximum number of points for the entire course is 450: Two quizzes, 10 points each (no make ups for the quizzes) Three exams, 110 points each Final exam, 100 points

BLAST! search at NCBI National Center for Biotechnology Information

BLASTing the genome to search for a match with the human insulin gene gives the following result:

We can BLAST the fruit fly genome with human insulin and we find an ortholog:

The major hormones that regulate growth in animals are insulin and insulin-like growth factor (the insulin signaling system.)

BLASTing the genome to search for a match with the human insulin gene gives the following result:

When we BLAST the human genome with the insulin gene, we Find the insulin gene and we also find two other genes that are very similar to insulin:
