Titanic

The Titanic was the largest ship to be built during its time.

It had nine decks and was as tall as an eleven-story building.

The Titanic was thought to be unsinkable. The Titanic set sail April 10, 1912, from England, and was sailing to America.

The Titanic set sail April 10, 1912, from England, and was sailing to America.

Colonel John Jacob, Astor, considered the world’s richest man, was aboard the Titanic, along with Mr. and Mrs. Isidor Straus, the founders of Macy’s Department Store.

Throughout the day on April, 14, 1912, the Titanic received seven warnings of icebergs.

Around 11:40 P.M. on April 14, 1912, the Titanic hit an iceberg.

The iceberg that the Titanic hit was about 400 miles from Newfoundland in the Atlantic Ocean.

The lowest part of the Titanic was divided into sixteen watertight compartments.

The Titanic could stay afloat if no more than four of the watertight compartments had water in them, but there was water in five compartments, and eventually all of them.

At 12:25 A.M., the ship Carpathia, received the Titanic’s distress call, and headed towards the sinking Titanic.

Women and children were allowed in the lifeboats first.

At 12:45 A.M., the first lifeboat left the ship, but there were only lifeboats for about half of the passengers.

Many lifeboats left the Titanic without being filled with people.

The ship stayed afloat a little more than two hours before sinking.

The band on the Titanic kept playing music until the ship sank.

More than 1,500 people died.

The ship, the Carpathia, rescued 705 people.

On September 1, 1985, Dr. Robert Ballard and others, discovered the wreck of the Titanic.

The bow of the Titanic.

In July of 1986, Dr. Ballard explored the Titanic with the help of Alvin and Jason Junior.
