Born: Magdalena Carmen Frieda Kahlo y Calderón, on July 6th 1907 and died July 13th, She later changed her name to Frida Kahlo de Rivera after marrying a famous Mexican muralist, Diego Rivera, but is most commonly knows as just Frida Kahlo. Kahlo was born into an upper class family. Her father Guillermo Kahlo, was Jewish, and her mother Matilde Calderón y González was a Roman Catholic with Amerindian and Spanish ancestry. Kahlo had two older half sisters and three younger sisters. Kahlo always said that she "grew up in a world surrounded by females", and was close to her father too. Kahlo was three years old when the Mexican revolution began, in Later in her life she said she was born in 1910, so then people would associate her with the revolution, even though her bate certificate states she was born in When Kahlo was six years old she got polio and the right leg became thinner than her left. She would often wear long, colorful skirts, so people wouldn't see her legs.... On September 17th, 1925, Kahlo was in a serious accident when her bus collided with a trolley car. She had a broken spinal column, a broken collarbone, broken ribs, a broken pelvis, fractures in her right legs, a crushed and dislocated right foot and a dislocated shoulder. An iron handrail had pierced her abdomen which made her unable to bear children. She was in a cast for three months and spent months bedridden because it was too painful for her to walk. She had up to thirty-five operations, most on her back and some on her right leg and right foot. Kahlo managed to get pregnant three times in her life, but all three times she had to have an abortion. It was after her accident that she had decided to take up her career in painting. Because she was bedridden for three months after her accident, her mother had a special easel board made for her so that she could paint while on bed, and she had borrowed her fathers paintbrushes and oil paints.... Kahlo often painted portraits of herself. In her lifetime she had made 140 paintings, and 50 of those were self portraits of herself. She used to lie down in bed and there was a mirror above so she could look at herself and paint. Most of her self portraits were painted in a dream-like reality but were about herself and her pain and depression. She used her paintings to show her physical and psychological wounds which were her way of accepting and recovering from herself. She would often say "I never painted dreams. I painted my own reality."
