Some animals eat only plants. They eat grass, leaves, tree bark, fruit, nuts, seeds, and parts of flowers. Say the animals’ names. What is each one having for its dinner? squirrel deer bee beaver

What is each one having for its dinner? bird monkey cow

Some animals eat only meat. Animals that eat meat have to hunt and catch their food. Say these hunting animals’ names. What does each one want for its dinner? frog fox robin fish

Help read this story by saying the animals’ names. One day a hungry went through the forest hunting for its dinner. saw Coyote coming. “Jay! Jay!” it called, to tell the other animals that a hunter was nearby.

ran away on its long, slim legs. sat very still in the bushes. It was the same color as the snow. Coyote couldn’t see it. dashed up a tall tree. It knew that Coyote could not climb after it.

Little ran into its underground home. Coyote was too big to get in the door of Chipmunk’s home. sat nibbling on a branch. When it saw Coyote, it raised its sharp quills. Coyote knew better than to touch porcupine. Those sharp needles would stick in Coyote’s face and paws. A black and white sat under a tree.

It did not try to run away from Coyote. raised its big bushy tail. Coyote backed away. could spray something that burned Coyote’s eyes and smelled very bad. Hunters cannot always catch their dinner. would have no dinner that day. Poor coyote!

This turtle cannot run fast. How could it protect itself from the coyote? Write, on a piece of paper, what you think the turtle could do.

What does the coyote get from eating food? ENERGY!
