Figurative Language

Literal: straightforward language (it means what it says)

Figurative: slanted language (it does not mean what it says)

Literal Example: She’s sad.

Figurative Example: She’s down in the dumps.

Literal Examples: His breath stinks.

Figurative Example: His breath smells like a bag of onions.

Simile Definition A simile is a figurative language technique where a comparison is made using like or as.
