Presentation transcript:

Wednesday September 21- Thursday September 22

 Of TV, video, telephone, music, and computer, which one would be most difficult for you to give up for one year. Why?

 To read closely for the craft of writing  To analyze how authors use symbolism in their writing

 “August Heat” by W. F. Harvey  Class discussion of August Heat  Group activity

 Something that represents something else, either by association or by resemblance  Writers insert symbols into their writing to allude to a feeling, mood or attitude without directly stating the perspective or mood intended. Symbolism is supplemental to the story.

Denotation-literal definition/dictionary Connotation-all the associations we have with a particular word Thin vs skinny vs slender have the same meaning (denotation) but have different connotation

Consider the following images:  What is their literal definition?  What associations or additional meanings do they have?  What emotions or memories do they evoke?

 ReRead “August Heat”  On a sheet of paper that you can turn in to me:  Find as many examples of symbolism in the text as you can  Can you find other literary devices we have discussed? (narrator, foreshadowing, simile and metaphor, allusion)
