In Fénerive Est and Vavatenina towns, in the Analanjirofo region of Madagascar, less then 9 % of people currently have access to clean water or safe sanitation. It was anticipated the project would help 1,800 people gain access to clean water and 1,200 people gain access to safe toilets by March 2007.
Life expectancy at birth has gradually improved from an average of 37.5 years for men and 38.3 years for women in 1966 to an average of fifty-two years for men and fifty-five years for women in 1990 The occurrence of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) has increased during the 1980s and the 1990s. The people of Madagascar enjoy very hot food and often serve dishes with hot peppers. True to its reputation as the Vanilla Island, many of the country’s desserts are flavoured with vanilla. Local restaurants are often referred to as hotely. The choice of beverages is limited
