Romans 9 – 11: God’s Plan for National Israel Creation Eternity Future Israel The Church Israel Rapture 2 nd Advent Millennial Kingdom Mt. Sinai

Basic Definition Salvation Deliverance From Something To Something

Salvation: Two Broad Categories  Spiritual Salvation  Physical Salvation  Spiritual Salvation  Physical Salvation

Salvation: Two Primary Applications  Individual Salvation  Group Salvation (i.e. national deliverance)

Spiritual Salvation Salvation JustificationSanctificationGlorification From:Penalty of SinPower of SinPresence of SinFalse Teaching To:Eternal LifeMaturity Presence of God in Heaven Sound Doctrine Occurs: A moment in time Over a lifetime Through out eternityOver time Requirement:BeliefObedience Death Study Result:Rightly Related to God

Physical Salvation (Temporal – in time) Salvation From:SicknessDangerDeathGod’s Wrath To:HealthSafetyLifeBlessing OccursIn timePresent & Future RequirementVaries: “Call on the Lord”, Faith, Obedience

The Primary Point:  When we see the words save, saved, or salvation, we need to understand, saved from what to what. In other words, what is the context.  Ps 70:1- 5 Hasten, O God, to save me; O Lord, come quickly to help me. 2 May those who seek my life be put to shame and confusion; may all who desire my ruin be turned back in disgrace. 3 May those who say to me, "Aha! Aha!“ turn back because of their shame. 4 But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who love your salvation always say, "Let God be exalted!“ 5 Yet I am poor and needy; come quickly to me, O God. You are my help and my deliverer; O Lord, do not delay. NIV (the context is physical danger)  Do not always equate save, saved, or salvation with “eternal life” or “go to heaven when I die”  When we see the words save, saved, or salvation, we need to understand, saved from what to what. You are my help and my deliverer; O Lord, do not delay. NIV (the context is physical danger)  Do not always equate save, saved, or salvation with “eternal life” or “go to heaven when I die”

A Secondary Point  In the book of Romans, the Apostle Paul uses 2 similar terms in a consistent manner. 1) Justification: eternal life, righteous (the justified are the righteous ones) 2) Salvation / Saved: physical deliverance (primarily God’s wrath which is His displeasure with sin), sanctification, and glorification.  This understanding helps us piece together Romans 10.  Two types: (1) Justification, (2) physical deliverance  In the book of Romans, the Apostle Paul uses 2 similar terms in a consistent manner. 1) Justification: eternal life, righteous (the justified are the righteous ones) 2) Salvation / Saved: physical deliverance (primarily God’s wrath which is His displeasure with sin), sanctification, and glorification.  This understanding helps us piece together Romans 10.  Two types: (1) Justification, (2) physical deliverance

A Few Definitions:  Confess: to agree, to say the same thing, assent, acknowledge, appeal (in Rom. 10 – to acknowledge and appeal to the Lord Jesus  Call: to appeal, to acknowledge (in Rom. 10 – to acknowlege and appeal to the Lord Jesus confess & call are very closely related  Heart: a description of the mind – internal thoughts and feelings

Romans 10: Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes. 5 Moses describes in this way the righteousness that is by the law: "The man who does these things will live by them." 6 But the righteousness that is by faith says: "Do not say in your heart, 'Who will ascend into heaven?'" (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 "or 'Who will descend into the deep?'" (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? "The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart," that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: 9 That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. 11 As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame." 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile — the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.“ 14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!" NIV

Romans 10:5-15 Outline I. A contrast of faith and works (Rom. 10:5-7)

Synopsis  Verse 5: People who live by the Mosaic Law or any works system are not justified (declared righteous) because they are incapable of living out the law perfectly (c.f. Rom. 9:30-32)  Verses 6-7 People who are righteous (justified) by faith accept that Jesus Christ is the Messiah and don’t try to add to what He has done.

Romans 10:5-15 Outline I. A contrast of faith and works (Rom. 10:5-7) II. The benefit of belief – Justification The benefit of confession - Salvation (Rom. 10:8-10)

Synopsis  Verse 8: Jesus is the word who indwells the righteous by faith.  Verses 9 Christians who are justified (sp. saved) will be delivered (physically saved) from temporal wrath and sanctified (sp. saved) when they call upon the Lord.  Verse 10 Christians are justified (declared righteous – sp. saved) when they believe on Jesus Christ and they are delivered (physically saved, & sp. saved –sanctified) when they confess/call on Jesus Christ.

Romans 10:9-10  9 that if you confess with your mouth, Lord Jesus, and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be delivered.  10 For with the heart he is believed for righteousness, but with the mouth He is confessed for deliverance.

Synopsis  Verse 8 Jesus is the word who indwells the righteous by faith.  Verses 9 Christians who are justified (sp. saved) will be delivered (physically saved) from temporal wrath and sanctified (sp. saved) when they call upon the Lord.  Verse 10 Christians are justified (declared righteous – sp. saved) (a one time event) when they believe on Jesus Christ and they are delivered (physically saved, & sp. saved –sanctified) when they confess/call on Jesus Christ (a repeated event)

Romans 10:5-15 Outline I. A contrast of faith and works (Rom. 10:5-7) II. The benefit of belief – Justification The benefit of confession - Salvation (Rom. 10:8-10) III. The blessings of a right relationship (Rom. 10:11-13)

Synopsis  Verse 11 Scripture guarantees no shame for those (the justified) who trust/believe.  Verses 12 All Christians (the justified) are richly blessed when they call on Jesus Christ.  Verse 13 All Christians (the justified) who call on the name of the Lord will be delivered (physical salvation, sanctification salvation).

Romans 10:5-15 Outline I. A contrast of faith and works (Rom. 10:5-7) II. The benefit of belief – Justification The benefit of confession - Salvation (Rom. 10:8-10) III. The blessings of a right relationship (Rom. 10:11-13) IV. The centrality of the spoken witness (Rom. 10:14-15)

Synopsis  Verse 14 Only those who believe can call on the Lord Jesus to be delivered (saved) The logic of an inverted order: “They” - Israelites Call (salvation) A proclaimer is sent who Believe (justification) preaches to a Heard hearer who becomes a Preach believer who then Sent calls on the One

In Essence  Romans 10:5-15 is about saved people becoming saved  Question:  Are you an unsaved person who needs to be saved?  Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ!  Or, are you a saved person who needs to be saved?  Call on Lord Jesus!
