Poor Housing in the Towns Lesson starter: Write a list of all the problems which poor housing had. Example ‘Shared toilets’

Today we will… Identify the problems of slum housing in Scotland’s cities Understand why these problems made people unhealthy

Before we learn about all the new types of housing in Scotland, we need to understand why change was needed during the 20th century This lesson will provide us with evidence of all the problems of slum housing

A Glasgow Tenement, 1868 Glue the picture of the tenement into your jotter under this heading A series of labels will now come up on the board which you will add to the picture

Uneven pavement Children sitting in alleyway Flooded alley Poor gas lighting Narrow alleyway Washing lines in close

Small windows and doors Open sewer Dark and dingy alleyway No green open spaces

What might this house have we can’t see? Shared toilets Single room for whole families High rent No running water No electricity

During the 19th and 20th centuries many people moved to towns and cities for work. This meant there was a shortage of decent housing and people were forced into slum housing where the rent was expensive despite terrible conditions. Why did people put up with these homes?

Mind Map Task Using ‘Slum Housing’ as your title, create a mind map which lists all the problems of Glasgow slums The list on page 6 of the housing booklet should make up the content of your mind map

KU Practice Identify some of the problems of slum housing in Scotland’s cities between 1880 and marks

ES Practice – 2005 General 4.Selecting Evidence – use table method 5.Conclusions – use answers from table and own knowledge

Today we will… Identify the hazards of living in a Glasgow tenement in the 19th century Understand why these made people unhealthy
