Massacre in Bosnia Donald Sterrett

Basics Takes Place between 1992 – Major Ethnic Groups: Serbs, Croats, and Bosnians( Muslims) Serbians kill approximately 200,000 Muslims

Where is Bosnia? Bosnia and Herzegovina is in Eastern Europe and became a country after the breakup of Yugoslavia in 1991

What Happened? After the split old hatreds reappear and Serbia and Croatia start fighting against each other. Bosnia (Mostly Muslim) declares its independence but Serbia invades them to prevent this from happening.

What Happened (Continued) Serbians led by Slobodan Milosevic and Bosnian Serbs led by Radovan Karadazic team together to “protect” Bosnian Serbs that made up approximately 1/3 rd of the population. This leads what becomes known as “Ethnic Cleansing” and the mass murder of approximately 200,000 Muslims.

MilosevicKarazdic

Atrocities Muslim men and boys were rounded up, shot, and placed into mass graves. Women and girls were often raped and killed. More then 2 million people were forced to become refugees.

War Crimes Tribunal Following the discovery of the horrible events the United Nations convened the second War Crimes Tribunal ever to bring the perpetrators of the Bosnian Genocide to justice. Milosevic and Karazdic were tried for Crimes Against Humanity.
