Faculty Orientation Fall 2012 International Technological University

Tonight’s Agenda Syllabus Standards and Requirements Class Hours and Credit Units Class Assignments and Exam Requirements EMS SLO, CSLO, Rubric - Required Usage Final Grade Entry Deadlines Attendance Tracking Requirements TA Responsibilities Classroom Observations

Welcome New and Returning Adjunct and Core Faculty Revised Faculty Handbook is available: community/staff/faculty-resources/ community/staff/faculty-resources/ Tonight, I’m going over the new and changed policies.

Syllabus Standards and Requirements You are required to create a syllabus for each of your classes. See syllabus template and sample syllabus handout. We will be checking for compliance. Questions?

Class Hours and Credit Units One hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work each week for fifteen weeks for one semester or trimester hour of credit. Even if there are no students you still need to be in the classroom for the required time.

Class Assignments and Exam Requirements You are required to hold at least ONE in- class exam (final exam) or a major in-class activity like a project presentation that counts for a substantial amount of the final course grade. It would be preferable for you to hold two in-class exams, a midterm and a final exam.

EMS SLO, CSLO, Rubric Required Usage You need to assign ALL CSLOs to assignments given in your class. Your TA will be trained on how to create SLOs and CSLOs and how to assign them. You may also ask Doreen Kirai for assistance.

EMS SLO, CSLO, Rubric Required Usage A few of you are grading CSLOs for one assignment or two and leaving other assignment CSLOs blank or grading one CSLO out of the many CSLOs assigned to each assignment. You are REQUIRED to grade ALL CSLOs assigned to each assignment.

Final Grade Entry The final grades are due ONE week after the term ends. A lot of OPT or CPT applications are pending those grades. Please make sure they are entered into the EMS within a week after the term ends.

Attendance Tracking Requirements Students are REQUIRED to attend 70% of your class, NO exceptions. Student who don’t attend 70% of the class should fail the class! You are responsible for taking the daily attendance in your class. DO NOT have your TA do this.

TA Responsibilities Your TA should not be given the SAME final exam. Do not ask your TA to print the exams. Joel in “Learning Resources” will print them for you. Your TA does not take attendance anymore, you do.

Classroom Observations Sara and other staff will be auditing classes to make sure all requirements are being met. We are also auditing your EMS class configuration. Please welcome our staff to your classes and let Sara know if you have any questions or concerns.

October WASC Visit There is an important WASC visit taking place Oct th. Please make yourself available to meet with the WASC team. More details will be available soon.

Questions? Feel free to contact me at any time at I wish you a smooth and happy Fall 2012 term!
