Class Expectations Mrs. Catherine Wishart, Senior Adjunct Instructor: Pre-College Reading Pre-College English English Composition Burlington County College

Class Expectations All writing assignments must be turned in to assure passing the course. This includes both in- class and homework writing assignments. All writing assignments must be properly headed in MLA format. Writing assignments should be turned in on time. Assignments will not be accepted if more than two weeks late.

Reading Classes The writing assignment for the reading classes is the Major Reading Project. This will be discussed in detail throughout the semester. Other assignments, such as Short Story Response and journal entries, are not required to be in MLA format. All of these assignments must be completed to assure passing the course.

MLA Format for Headings Jane Jones Mrs. Wishart ENG 075.## FW# 7 17 November 2008 The Importance of Writing in Society During a person’s lifetime, the need to write in order to communicate is an inescapable reality in today’s world. Follow the order above: student name, instructor’s name, course number and section, formal writing #, date. Center the title. DO NOT underline or place your title in quotations. Double space everything on the paper.

MLA Format for Paper Type your paper on a computer and print it out on standard, white 8.5 x 11-inch paper, Double-space the text of your paper, and use a legible font like Times New Roman or Courier. Leave only one space after periods or other punctuation marks (unless otherwise instructed by your instructor). Set the margins of your document to 1 inch on all sides. Indent the first line of a paragraph one half-inch (five spaces or press tab once) from the left margin. Use either italics or underlining throughout your essay for the titles of longer works and, only when absolutely necessary, providing emphasis. If you have any endnotes, include them on a separate page before your Works Cited page.

Exercises assigned in the text should be completed in a timely manner. These assignments will be reviewed in class as needed. Do not turn these assignments into the instructor unless requested. Pop quizzes on assigned readings may occur at any time. Be prepared. Skills Bank and Townsend Press Website assignments must be completed. Completion of these assignments will be checked by the instructor and count toward the final grade.

Study skills will also be reviewed in class. These skills are meant to assist in all college classes. In order to do well in any college course, attendance is necessary. All papers must be stapled. It is not the instructor’s responsibility to provide a stapler.

What You Can Expect The instructor will provide additional assistance to students who demonstrate effort but still struggle. Additional free tutoring may be offered by the instructor if needed. The instructor will keep the class informed of changes to the class schedule. However, if you miss a class, it is your job to find out from other students what was missed. The instructor will check at least twice per week to assure student concerns or questions are addressed in a timely manner.

The Importance of Attendance In order to do well in any course, attendance is exceptionally important. All student attendance is reported to the department that supervises the course. Burlington County College policy requires that students put every effort into making every class on time. Excused absences include illness, religious observances, or personal emergencies (such as death in the family). Studies have shown a direct correlation between student attendance and grades. Develop good attendance habits now in order to have a successful college career.

Another Point….This is Non-negotiable! Use proper cell phone etiquette! –Phones on vibrate or silent –Do not answer the phone in classroom – leave the room (and leave only if there is an emergency!) –No text messaging –No phones at all during testing –These rules apply to I-pods and all other electronic devices

Also Not Negotiable! The use of the computers in this class are for CLASS WORK ONLY! Before class, you may use computers for other academic projects During class, you may only visit the websites or files assigned for use during that class period You may not surf the web, check e- mails, or play games during class. Breaking the rules for phone, electronic devices, and computer use will have an adverse effect on your final grade. You are part of a learning community – you are expected to respect the rights of others to learn in an environment with the least possible disruptions.
