Hey! What Do You Mean By That?

Sometimes one word can mean many different things. It can have different meanings. It is easy to figure out the meaning of a word by reading around that word!

Don’t just choose a meaning that you know! It must make sense within the passage. Let’s try some together!

I was next in the line-up. The bases were loaded. I was hoping for a home run! I just had to pick out my bat and head to the batters box. In this paragraph, the word home means: home: 1.a building in which people live 2. A place a person feels comfortable 3. The plate in the game of baseball where the runs are scored

You are right! The word home in this paragraph means the base in which the runs are scored in baseball! Way to use your brain!

I was next in the line-up. The bases were loaded. I was hoping for a home run! I just had to pick out my bat and head to the batters box. In this paragraph, the word bat means: bat 1. A mammal that hangs upside-down in caves 2. A wooden or aluminum stick used to hit the ball in the game of baseball

YES! YES! YES! The passage is talking about a bat used in baseball, because that is what the paragraph is about!

After finding out that George did not make the team, his friends were very blue. In this paragraph, the word blue means: blue 1. Sad, or depressed (mood) 2. A color

Great thinking! See, with just a little thought about what you are reading, the easiest thing is the meaning!

Do you think you are ready for a little game to practice finding the correct meaning of a word used in a paragraph? Let’s go!!!
