Division with Remainders By Mr. Bales

Objective By the end of the lesson, you will be able to divide with and without remainders. Standard 4NS3.2 - Demonstrate an understanding of, and the ability to use, standard algorithms for multiplying a multidigit number by a two-digit number and for dividing a multidigit number by a one-digit number; use relationships between them to simplify computations and to check results.

Introduce Activity: Hands-On For this activity, I will invite 5 students to come to the front. I will be dealing out cards to each of these students. I must deal the cards so that each students ends up with the same number of cards. The leftover cards will be placed in a pile.

Teach Think about if I had dealt a set of 17 cards to a group of 3 students. How many cards are being given out? How many equal groups will there be? After the cards are given out, how many cards will each student have? How many cards will be left over? Write a number sentence to represent this division.

Example Mr. Hein’s class is going to a natural history museum. Each seat on the bus can hold 2 people. There are 28 students and 8 adults. How many seats are needed? How many total people went on the bus? There are 36 people. Each seat holds 2 people. Find 36 / 2.

OUR SAYING Please repeat after me, “Del Mar Students Can Boogie Down.” Del = Divide Mar = Multiplication Students = Subtraction Can = Compare Boogie = Bring Down = Down

Teach There are 36 people. Each seat holds 2 people. Find 36 / 2. First, let’s set up the problem and define some important terms Divisor – the number by which the dividend is being divided. Dividend – a number that is being divided. 18 Quotient – the answer to a division problem.

Teach There are 36 people. Each seat holds 2 people. Find 36 / 2. 1 Step 1 – Divide the tens Step 2 – Multiply, Subtract, and Compare. Ask yourself – “How many groups of 2 can I make with 3?” Multiply 2 x 1 = 2 Subtract = 1 Compare 1 < 2

Teach There are 36 people. Each seat holds 2 people. Find 36 / 2. Step 3 – Bring down the ones.

Teach There are 36 people. Each seat holds 2 people. Find 36 / 2. Step 4 – Divide the ones. Ask yourself – “How many groups of 2 can I make with 16?” Divide 16 / 2 = 8 Put 8 in the quotient over the ones place. Multiply 2 x 8 = 16 Subtract 16 – 16 = 0 Compare 0 < 2.

Teach Let’s listen to our good ol’ friend, Mrs. Verughese!! Mrs. Verughese!!!

Bales Bucks Divide. Check each answer. 26 ÷ 2 36 ÷ 3 59 ÷ 5 84 ÷ 4 86 ÷ 3 93 ÷ 3 61 ÷ 2
