Session IV: Taking the New Fine Arts TEKS to the Next Level – Connecting the Fine Arts PRESENTERS: Mark Gurgel & Dr. Mackie Spradley

"... the arts have been an inseparable part of the human journey; indeed, we depend on the arts to carry us toward the fullness of our humanity... in any civilization - ours included - the arts are inseparable from the very meaning of the term 'education.' We know from long experience that no one can claim to be truly educated who lacks basic knowledge and skills in the arts." –National Standards for Arts Education How does this quote emphasize the meaning of the arts in culture and civilization?

Defining Civilization & Culture Civilization: organized societies, peoples and groups that maintain three primary functions: ceremony (ways to pass on traditions & culture), communication and government. Culture: shared Culture: shared beliefs, stories, histories, traditions and lived experiences of a society, group, or people.

Characteristics of Civilizations and Culture Fluid, evolve, may change over time out of necessity When in isolation, civilizations and cultures can remain fixed Influenced and shaped by time, location and shared language, belief and practice

When you hear the words culture and civilization, what do you envision? Greek Greek Roman Roman French (French fries don’t count!!) French (French fries don’t count!!) Celtic Celtic Egyptian Egyptian Chinese Chinese

How do we reframe our concept of culture and civilization for the 21 st century? Different cultures exist within any given civilization. Each culture may express their distinctness in language, history, religion, story and the arts. Although each civilization uses fine arts, the expressions are distinct for each culture.

Universal Language = Fine Arts? Language : noun the system of words or signs that people of different cultures use to express thoughts and feelings to each other Universal Language: noun a constructed term used to discuss the commonality of the expressions of art, music, dance, and theatre in all cultures.

How can we reframe our thinking about culture? How are the beliefs, stories, histories, religions and lived experiences of our students similar and different? How would we use this information to create Fine Arts lessons and projects?

Session IV Objectives In Session IV we will…  Consider the impact of the Fine Arts on Culture & Civilizations  Consider the commonality of the Fine Arts  Finish Collaborative Projects  Present projects
