Torture Definition The infliction of severe physical or psychological pain or grief as an expression of cruelty, a means of intimidation, deterrent, revenge or punishment, or as a tool for the extraction of information or confessions December 7, 2005

Legal Status of Torture United Nations Convention Against Torture (UNCAT) June 1987 Article 2 Each party shall take effective legislative, administrative, judicial, or other measures to prevent acts of torture in any territory under its jurisdiction No exceptional circumstances whatsoever, whether a state of war or threat of war, internal political instability or any other public emergency, may be invoked as a justification of torture An order from a superior officer or a public authority may not be invoked as a justification of torture December 7, 2005
