Helping Verbs: (to name a few)

Standard/I can ELAGSE7L1: Demonstrate commands of standard English grammar and usage when writing. ELAGSE7RL10: By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poems, in the grades 6-8 text complexity band proficiency, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range. ELAGSE7SL1: Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions with diverse partners on grade 7 topics, texts, and issues, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly. I can read and comprehend a text. I can work collaboratively with others to discuss a text.

Hook: Parts of Speech Watch: Helping Verbs Video

Mini-Lesson Helping verbs: Using the foldable we made… Define helping verb. Helping verb – a verb that “helps” an action verb or linking verb. Copy the quotes provided (see below). Underline the helping verbs that are helping the action verbs and linking verbs. After the helping verb is underlined, draw an arrow to the verb it is helping. From the Introduction of The Giver written by Lois Lowry showing examples from the mail she receives with reader opinions about this book: “This book has changed my life.” “Jesus would be ashamed of you.”
