MOOD Created especially for Mrs. Mac’s English II Pre-AP from Glencoe Timeless Voices, Platinum Level

Mood: The atmosphere or emotional condition created by the piece, within the setting. Mood refers to the general sense or feeling which the reader is supposed to get from the text; it does not, as a literary element, refer to the author’s or characters’ state of mind.

The mood of Macbeth is dark, murky and mysterious, creating a sense of fear and uncertainty. (Note that mood is a literary element, not a technique; the mood must therefore be described or identified. It would be incorrect to simply state, “The author uses mood.”)

MOOD: The atmosphere that pervades a literary work with the intention of evoking a certain emotion or feeling from the audience. In drama, mood may be created by sets and music as well as words; in poetry and prose, mood may be created by a combination of such elements as SETTING, VOICE, TONE and THEME. The moods evoked by the more popular short stories of Edgar Allen Poe, for example, tend to be gloomy, horrific, and desperate. Poe is my homeboy.

For example, an author may create a mood of mystery around a character or setting but may treat that character or setting in an ironic, serious, or humorous tone. Mark Twain

Mood is the climate of feeling in a literary work. The choice of setting, objects, details, images, and words all contribute towards creating a specific mood.

Mood The mood is the feeling or atmosphere of a piece. The mood can be many different things.

Mood can be a feeling of love.

Mood can be a feeling of fear.

Mood can be a feeling of doom.

Mood can be a feeling of pride.

Mood can be a feeling of chaos.

Mood can be a feeling of peace.

Mood is the atmosphere created by a literary work that is often suggested by descriptive details.

The lines from William Butler Yeats ’ “ The Stolen Child ” are a good example: Where the wave of moonlight glosses The dim grey sands with light suggests a mysterious, mystical atmosphere in which a meeting takes place between fairies and a human child.
