1/31 Warm Up On your green SWOD answer the following questions: Write the energy transfers for: EARTHQUAKES = _____________  ____________  ____________ VOLCANOES = ___________  ______________ SME SEISMIC MECHANICAL HEAT

Plate Boundaries Divergent Convergent Transform

Breaking it Up/ Snack-tectonics Lab Question: How do the plates move? Hypothesis: Discuss in your tables 3 different ways that the tectonic plates can move Materials: – Molten magma/lava = frosting – Oceanic plates = graham cracker – Continental plates = vanilla wafer – Wax paper = wax paper

Get Materials…but don’t do anything yet #1 – Wipes down tables before and after #2 - wax paper #3 – 2 small rectangles of graham cracker per person #4 – 2 vanilla wafers per person

Procedures 1.Spread the MAGMA on wax paper in a rectangle shape, the size of your two oceanic plates. 2.Lightly lay the 2 oceanic plates on the MAGMA side by side. 3.Press down on the plates and slowing pull them apart. 4.What type of plate boundary movement does this represent? DIVERGENT

5. Remove plates and scrap off MAGMA back to wax paper and reshape to original form. 6. Lightly place 1 oceanic plate side by side with 1 continental plate. 7. Push both plate towards each other. 8. What type of plate boundary movement does this represent? CONVERGENT Why did the oceanic go beneath the continental?

9. Brainstorm what you think will happen when you make a transform plate boundary 10. Test it 11. Brainstorm what you think will happen when you make a convergent plate boundary movement with 2 continental plates. 12. Test it 13. Destroy plates and magma

Clean Up Throw away any leftover food Person #1 wipes down your table Pull out Flipbooks
