Notes 3.2 Mixed Numbers and Improper Fractions A fraction is a proper fraction if it is less than 1. It is an improper fraction if it is greater than or equal to 1. An improper fraction greater than 1 can be rewritten as a mixed number. Examples: To change 8/5 to a mixed number, divide 8 by 5, then write the remain- der over 5. Reduce the fraction if necessary. 8/5 = 1 3/5.
To change 3¾ to an improper fraction, multiply the whole number 3 by the denominator 4, and then add the numerator 3. Finally, put that number over 4, the original denominator. 3¾ = 15/4. To write 3¾ as a decimal, write 3. and then change ¾ to a decimal By dividing the numerator by the denominator. 3¾ = 3.75.
