The Salty Pretzels Task 4.NF.B.3.a I can understand how to add fractions by reasoning about the whole. 4.NF.B.3.c I can add mixed numbers.

 Review what we already know about the fractions  Complete a task (private, small group, whole group)  Reflect on what we have learned Today we will…

 Teach your partner what is true about adding or subtracting fractions with like denominators. Partner Talk  The denominators stay the same, and the numerators are added or subtracted.  Teach your partner what is true when the numerator and denominator of a fraction are the same.  The fraction is equal to a whole.

 Solve the following equations in your notebook = =  Circle the fraction that is equal to a whole.  Draw a rectangle around the fraction that is greater than a whole.  Draw a model or write a sentence to explain your thinking. Math NB Quick Write

Mary has a pretzel booth at the county fair. Soft and salty pretzels are her specialty. Mary measured her supply of salt to sprinkle on the pretzels and found that she had 11 cups to use during the week. If Mary has 2 cups of salt remaining to make the pretzels on Friday, she will not need to go the market. Mary thinks that she has enough salt for the pretzels on Friday. On Monday, Mary used 3 ¾ cups of salt. On Tuesday, she used 1 ¾ cups of salt. She used 2 ¼ cups of salt on Wednesday and 1 ¾ cups of salt on Thursday. Do you think Mary is right or wrong that she has at least 2 cups of salt to use on Friday without going to the market? Explain why you think Mary is right or wrong. Include a model and addition and/or subtraction equations in your explanation. The Salty Pretzels Task

 What is the relationship between an improper fraction and a mixed number? Summary  How can fractions greater than a whole be represented?  Why does the denominator remain the same when like fractions are added?

 Write the sum of the fractions as both a mixed number and improper fraction = or 6 6  Draw a diagram to represent your thinking.  How are you feeling? Post on the chart. (Huh? Maybe… Duh!) Post-It Note Reflection
