RICK KILPATRICK Presentation Topics 1.Practice planning and implementation 2.Warm-up & Team Drills 3.Attacking the rim 4.Beating the zone 5.Other ideas

PRACTICE PLANNING Time is short…Plan it out Make things competitive Drills: short, sweet, and move on (ditch it?) Have a routine…move quickly Keep them busy: Use assistants / parents. Avoid 12 kids in a line (11 aren’t really paying attention).

IMPLIMENTING THE PLAN Use pre-gym time (hallway, classroom, lobby) Stretch, teach, chalk-talk, 3-threats, form shooting before taking the floor Teach early in practice Follow teaching with fun / competitive drills Teach conceptually by playing 3v3 or 4v4

TEAM WARM-UP DRILLS Full court layups (everyone has a ball) Pairs 1.Passing (all types) 2.Catch & sits / 3-Threat 3.Form shooting 4.Conditioning 5 Second Battle One-Man-Shell

TEAM DRILLS Recognition and “War Drill”: WarDrill.html WarDrill.html Rebound Drill: “WPI” CUT THROAT Setting screens 20 (or 10) PASS 4v4v4 NEED CLARIFICATION ON ANY DRILLS, ME

TEACH WITH SCRIMMAGE RULES No score kept – but 1 st team for all players to score wins Limit Dribbles – Max 3 per touch, no dribbles inside arc, etc Move w/out it – Certain players can’t score off a dribble Reward – All baskets count as 1 plus other any other stat Transition – transitions plus charges count as two, all other baskets count as one DON’T INTERRUPT SCRIMMAGES MUCH – IF SO, MAKE IT QUICK – SUB KIDS OUT TO TALK

Slowing Down & Attacking the Rim  Catch and sit / 3-Threat / Look first  “Quiet feet” / Off the toes  Draw the defender close  Rips and Shot fakes  1st dribble  Straight-line drives  Most players don’t beat their guy b/c they don’t know they have or are unwilling to ‘turn the corner’ and ‘dig a shoulder’

No one asked but…. WHAT I WOULD DO IF I COACHED TRAVEL OR REC BALL? “Be great at the things that take no talent” – B. Stevens Pick 3 concepts to emphasize and verbalize every practice and game: Tell you’re team we are going to be better at these things than everyone we play! Do 3 drills that put these concepts into action: shell, rebound, cut throat w/ limited dribbles, one transition drill and DO THEM EVERY PRACTICE!

No one asked but…. Consistent Terminology Swing it! – One more! North / South Catch & Look Rip! Where is it? Only guy who hurts you is…? Straight-up! Wait for it

No one asked but…. REMOVE SOME BAD HABITS Shooting 3’s = Poor form (?) Poor shot selection Catch and immediately put the ball above their head Catch and dribble Dribble in place (Ball gets ‘stuck’) Rebound with one hand Bigs bring the ball down (chin it!) Jog back on defense Don’t wait for and use screen

Other Practice Ideas Limit dribbles (big believer in this) Talking in practice (players) Transition from drill to drill quickly Play 5 on 6 vs press Mix up their partners / groups Pop quiz Scrimmages: top 5 or even teams?

BEATING THE ZONE Attack it early Reversal Paint or short-corner touches Ball fakes Skips are tough…so screen the zone Crash the boards KY vs 2-3 / ‘22’ vs 3-2

Closing Thoughts Basketball is changing. More team play. Need better fundamentals first:  Footwork  Passing (less dribbling)  Movement / spacing / floor balance SHOW them good offense = Pass > Dribble. Use YouTube with your team (The Spurs). Teach efficiency Teach not to foul Concepts & Terms > Plays & X’s and O’s Be in touch if I can help or for a copy of this
