Supporting pupils at school with medical conditions An LSCB workshop to guide local implementation and learning from recent case reviews

This session Gives an overview of findings from a recent LSCB Partnership Review, involving the tragic death of a young man with epilepsy Offers an overview of key information regarding four acute medical conditions:  Epilepsy  Diabetes  Severe Allergies  Asthma Offers guidance on implementing statutory guidance and developing Individual Health Care Plans

A White British 15 year old boy, who was known to suffer from epilepsy, died on 4th January 2014 He was known to be polite, caring to family members, smartly dressed and positive about his return to school after the previous summer holidays. A teacher described him as 'likeable and helpful'. Whilst there was some evidence of loving relationships between family members, anger was also a feature, and the children were variously subject to physical chastisement (abuse), emotional abuse and neglect. The cause of death has been ascertained as 'Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy' (SUDEP). The levels of his anti-epileptic medication were significantly below the normal therapeutic range. The Partnership Review

The Partnership Review was delivered by an experienced Independent lead reviewer. Frontline professionals who had worked with the family participated in this review, as did the young man’s parents. The Report is not due to be published but the learning will be shared across the City. The findings of the review highlight a number of issues for learning and improvement including: a need for child-centred practice; the informed management of long-term health problems in childhood; compliance in the context of statutory and non-statutory interventions The recognition and response to childhood neglect. Despite the involvement of a number of agencies, there was limited evidence of the achievement of measurable, timely and positive outcomes for the children. The Review

Governing bodies must ensure that arrangements are in place in schools to support pupils at school with medical conditions. Governing bodies should ensure that school leaders consult health and social care professionals, pupils and parents to ensure that the needs of children with medical conditions are effectively supported.
