ToSEE - Tourism in South East Europe 3rd International Scientific Conference Sustainable Tourism, Economic Development and Quality of Life University of Rijeka, Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management Opatija Motivation Cities drivers of economic development as tourism destinations - vision in maximizing the economic, environmental and socio-cultural sustainability for their residents and visitors In planning city development many elements of the offer should be considered

Purpose To present the attitudes of the TOURISTS, RESIDENTS, MANAGEMENT, On different organizational elements of Opatija and its surroundings such as: transport accessibility, urban harmony, maintenance and design of parks and green spaces, maintenance and cleanliness of beaches, working hours of restaurants and service facilities etc.

Study area OPATIJSKA RIVIJERA  Opatija  Ičići  Ika  Lovran  Medveja  Mošćenička Draga  Matulji KVARNER

Study area Opatija Riviera and it smaller cities and towns (Ičići, Lovran, Matulji, Medveja, Mošćenička Draga and Opatija). The research conducted in the Kvarner region was based on: 4053 correctly completed questionnaires that surveyed 1989 tourists, 1807 residents and 257 tourism managers from 36 tourism destinations ToSEE - Tourism in South East Europe 3rd International Scientific Conference

Methodology comparison with the research conducted in 2006 and 2011 a sophisticated questionnaire adapted to each target group (tourists, residents, tourism management grade scale: scale from 1 (the worst) to 7 (the best) in the common part of the questionnaire, 37 elements of tourist offer were evaluated, and were later divided into 5 thematic units second part contained specific questions characteristic only of that target group

Common part: Evaluation of 37 elements of tourist offer, later divided into following groups:  SPACE, RESOURCES, ENVIRONMENT  CONTENTS  DESTINATION ORGANIZATION  IDENTIFICATION, SECURITY, AWARENESS  RESIDENT, EMPLOYED PERSONS destinations’ organisational For the purposes of this work, only the research data relating to the destinations’ organisational elements were selected and analysed.

Contribution Results represent the relevant information base necessary for managing the city as a tourism destination on all levels The results provide the local authorities, with practical answers for defining the urban strategies of the city as a tourism destination The research results represent a quality tool for determining the characteristics of the destinations’ offers, and for monitoring the tourism trends over a longer period of time

Conclusion Opatija Urban development planning should be approached as an integral part of global economic and social development of the city Main goal is integrating tourism into the existing economic environment of the city and preventing potential conflicts This research represents a model for quality tourism destination management at the level of the Opatija Riviera and it smaller cities and towns
