Do Now 8-31 I can comprehend text. Directions: Read the excerpt below. On your “Do Now,” write down THREE MAJOR NOUNS. In 1963, blacks and whites in much of the South ate at separate restaurants, went to separate schools, and even drank from separate water fountains. Some whites at the time were racists. Some used violence against African-Americans. But things were about to change. The leaders of the civil rights movement were working hard to make our country a fairer place.

READ THE PLAY “Fighting for Fairness” Separate into two groups. Assign roles Read

Plot List the major characters. What is the major conflict in the story? Do you believe the conflict is solved? Who changes in the story?

Question 1 What is the setting of the story? (Hint: remember there are 2 parts to setting). –Place: Maryland –Time: 1963

Question 2 Why is it a problem that Carter, Jake’s brother, is dating Greg’s sister? –Greg’s sister is white & Carter is African American.

Question 3 Who led a march in Detroit, in which more than 125,000 white and black people walked together. –Martin Luther King.

Question 4 Why does this march upset Mr. Evans? –He believes Martin Luther King is a “troublemaker.” –He is also upset his son is talking about the protests.

Question 5 Carter claims “_______ is happening all around us.” –Change

Question 6 Carter cannot marry his girlfriend, Sheila. Why? –Inter-racial marriage is illegal.

Question 7 As Jake and Chris walk home from school, they noticed 2 differences between white & blacks. What are the differences? –School: The school for white students is much nicer than their school. –Water Fountain: Two water fountains labeled “white” and “colored.”

Question 8 Why does Carter get arrested? –He was holding hands with Sheila.

Question 9 The police report states that Carter was arrested for this reason: –Trying to start a fight with a police officer.

Question 10 Jake begins to feel differently about Martin Luther King after Carter is arrested. What if Carter never got arrested, would he feel differently? –Probing Question

Question 11 Why is Mr. Evans crying at the end of the play? –As he listens to Dr. King speak, he believes change can happen.
