The moon moves from east to west across the sky in an arc.
The moon has an elliptical orbit, and revolves around the Earth.
The moon appears largest when it is closest to Earth and smallest when it is farthest away from Earth.
Tides are caused by the gravitational pull of the Moon and the Sun on the oceans of Earth.
More extreme tides occur when the earth, moon and sun are in a straight line.
Less extreme tides occur when the earth, moon and sun are at right angles.
Really are the part of the lit side of the moon that we see
1. New Moon- no lit part can be seen
2. Waxing- lit to the right, lit side growing.
3. Full Moon- all is lit
4. Waning- dark to the right, lit side shrinking.
The phase is a crescent when less than half appears lit and called gibbous when more than half appears lit.
When half of the moon appears lit this is known as a quarter.
