Key Requirement of Direct Communication for PPDR Application Talk-around Direct Communications among HR-MSs –HR-MS shall communicate with adjacent HR-MSs independent of infrastructure communication. Firefighters’ scenario in basement under ground Disaster relief scenarios on the scene of disaster Service Coverage as large as possible –The coverage is critical to PPDR scenarios. TETRA’s DC coverage is known as 400m ~ 2Km for 25 kHz carrier bandwidth –It may be a problem of firefighter’s life under ground.

Talk-around Direct Communication (1) Direct communication among adjacent HR-MSs –Independent of radio deployments: Under BS coverage Out of BS coverage Critical scenarios not supporting talk-around communication with a BS-controlled DC approach –HR-MSs out of BS coverage

Talk-around Direct Communication (2) Critical scenarios not supporting talk-around communication with a BS-controlled DC approach –HR-MSs under a BS coverage and HR-MSs under BS coverage No communication between HR-BSs

Talk-around Direct Communication (3) Critical scenarios not supporting talk-around communication with a BS-controlled DC approach –Multi-mode operation of HR-MS acting as HR-BS No backhaul connection Small coverage of HR-MS acting as HR-BS because of HR-MS’s power emission limitation.

Talk-around Direct Communication (4) How to cover all the critical scenarios of talk-around DC that are described previous slides? –Solution: a distributed resource allocation among adjacent HR-MSs. Independent operation of BS deployments An HR-MS sends packets on a selected resource HR-MSs receive packets on the resource if the sending HR-MS shares resource information with the receiving HR-MSs. –No changes of DC algorithms across DC use cases. It’s hard to detect boundaries across DC use cases DC disables at a period if DC algorithms change.

Talk-around Direct Communication (5) How to share resource information among HR-MSs? –Solution: a dedicated resource that HR-MSs share for talk- around direct communication. Synchronization among adjacent HR-MSs Random access based communication with adjacent HR-MSs –A proposal for 16m based specification

Talk-around Direct Communication (6) A BS-controlled resource allocation approach could not meet the talk-around direct communication requirement for PPDR application The BS-controlled resource allocation approach is applicable to both DC use case 1 and DC use case 2 only. NOT PPDR –This is for applications including Smart Grid NOT PPDR.

Talk-around Direct Communication (7) Proposes to provide two types of direct communications in IEEE n –A BS-controlled resource allocation for direct communication to meet requirements from applications including Smart Grid. Consistent with existing infrastructure frame structure Most of signaling procedures are between HR-MS and HR-BS –A few of Signaling procedures between HR-MSs (?) <= I am not sure. –A distributed resource allocation for talk-around direct communication to meet requirements from PPDR applications Talk-around DC resources and infrastructure resources are exclusive Most of signaling procedure are among adjacent HR-MSs

Service Coverage (1) The TETRA system uses 25 kHz carrier bandwidth. –The minimum bandwidth of 16m carrier is 5MHz. The ratio of 16m carrier bandwidth to TETRA’s one is 200 (23dB). –Service coverage loss by 23dB –For example) If we assume 5 dB loss across a floor (wall), 16m’s service coverage is short about 4 floors under ground.

Service Coverage (2) How to extend service coverage of talk-around direct communication? –Solution: A narrowband signal transmission for talk-around direct communication. One PRU for synchronization and contention based transmission The minimum unit for talk-around communication among HR-MSs is 1/6 PRU.

(out of scope of this contribution) –A Distributed resource allocation of talk-around direct communication for PPDR applications.
