Margaret Christison Head of Product Data Standards Product Information Standards Defence Logistics 2004

SCOPE Why do we need Product Information Standards. STandard for Exchange Product Data (STEP). Product Life-Cycle Support (PLCS). MOD UK future vision.

Across MOD, primes, sub-contractors. Throughout the product life-cycle. Internationally. To provide access to information for > 50 years. Why does the MOD need Information Standards To exchange/share information:

Tri-Service Used internationally Current Logistics Support Standard - Def Stan The MOD Standard for contracting for Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) information

It does not include feedback mechanisms It is costly to implement as a national defence-only requirement Current Logistics Support Standard - Def Stan It is based on outdated information model

An International standard A standard applicable across defence and commercial support sectors Future Information Standard Our requirements were for… Enabling information interoperability across the Extended Enterprise

The Extended Enterprise Extended enterprises are formed to meet project specific requirements –Partners may differ from project to project –Different partners are likely use different systems –Companies want a common way to exchange digital product data –Configuration Management becomes a key enabler for information exchange Program Manager Sales Marketing Engineering Support Mfg. Project Z Product Team 2 Product Team 1 Project Y Project X Supplier A Supplier B Supplier C Partner FIREWALL

STEP (ISO 10303) STANDARD FOR THE EXCHANGE OF PRODUCT MODEL DATA

ISO “ISO is an International Standard for the computer- interpretable representation and exchange of product data. The objective is to provide a neutral mechanism capable of describing product data throughout the life- cycle of a product, independent from any particular system. The nature of this description makes STEP suitable not only for neutral file exchange, but also as a basis for implementing, sharing product databases and archiving”

STEP Project Initiated in 1984 to: –Cover all aspects of CAD/CAM exchange. –Separate description of product data from its implementation ( neutral format for exchange, sharing, archiving). –Describe product data throughout the life of the product.

STEP Advantage Product Data Integration Seamless product data exchange Supply chain support and integration Parts supplier Second tier supplier Prime product developer

Current MOD Involvement Actively involved in developing STEP Application Protocols (APs) Supply Chain Improvements –Rapid Acquisition of Manufactured Parts (RAMP) Major player in PLCS initiative – extending STEP to address through-life support (AP239)

Product Life Cycle Support –An international project to produce an approved draft ISO standard by Oct 03 –PLCS extends ISO STEP - the STandard for Exchange of Product model data to deliver ISO10303 AP239 –PLCS will ensure support information is aligned to the evolving product definition over the entire life cycle

Finnish Defence Forces The Sponsors

Business Drivers Reduced Cost of Ownership –Users of products are seeking improved availability, reliability, maintainability and lower cost of ownership. Protect investment in product data –Users of information systems want to reduce IT costs and ensure longevity in use of information Sustainable Business Growth –Companies are seeking to increase business opportunity, revenue and profits by offering life cycle support services

The DLO Vision Unity of purpose, certainty of delivery ….excelling in intelligent logistics

The Task - To Transform Support on an End-to- End Basis Enabled by accurate timely information Better Value Strategic Change Single Change Programme Support Transformation Better Management

Support Transformation Traditional Contracting for Availability Spares Inclusive Contracting for Capability Internal Provision Intelligent Customer External Provision

Support Transformation Operational requirements –Need a mixed economy of support solutions –Better information enables more informed decision making Contracting for availability/capability –Depends upon visibility of information across the supply chain –Requires accurate operational feedback

Information is key to: Efficiency –Improved business process need common language across boundaries Effectiveness –Improved support need access to information across the entire supply chain Economy –Use of open information standards is key to driving down costs

Summary MOD and Industry are working together to develop Product Information Standards (ISO10303) Product Information Standards are key to driving down support costs ISO10303 is the MOD standard for electronic exchange of Product Information

ISO will enable UK MOD to contract against an Open, Neutral and Commercial ISO Support Data Standard ISO is a keystone in the development of the MOD support transformation policy and driving down equipment support costs.
