THEME

Definition of Theme It’s what the story reveals about people and life. A discovery of a truth about our own existence. Theme is what a story is REALLY about. It is the meaning or lesson you take away from the story.

Where does it say what the theme is? The author does NOT state it directly. The author wants you to DISCOVER it yourself as you read.

To help you identify the theme of a story: How has the main character changed over the course of the story? What has the main character discovered? Which scenes are important? What ideas about life do they suggest? What is the story’s title?

Thesis Statement A sentence with a subject and opinion (also called commentary). This sentence is USUALLY the last sentence in the introduction paragraph.

Sample Intro Rikki Anyone can be a hero. You don’t have to be big, strong, and powerful. In “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi” by Rudyard Kipling, Rikki proves that heroism can come in very small packages.
