3 changes in Tom Parks: Bell activity-Journal: Describe what you think happens to Digger and J.T. in camp. How well do you think they adjust to life. Do you think they stay friends or do you think they avoid each other? Digger’s attitude changed toward the end of Red Kayak, but do you think he continued to recognize his responsibility for his own actions? Do you think he falls back into old habits of blaming others? What is life going to be like for the boys when they come back to Baily’s Warf? Do you think they become friends again with Brady? Why or why not? For any of these questions, why or why not? TODAY WE WILL LEARN…...which RK characters can be proven dynamic..how to organize our information in preparation for the 3 BODY PARAGRAPHS of your 5 PARAGRAPH ESSAY

Preparing for the 5 paragraph essay….. 3 changes in Tom Parks: From the novel, Red Kayak by Priscilla Cummings choose a character that changes throughout the story. In a five paragraph, argument essay, prove that your chosen character is dynamic and show how he or she changes.

Preparing for the 5 paragraph essay….. What makes a character dynamic? 3 changes in Tom Parks: A character who changes, intellectually or emotionally is dynamic. In the beginning of the story he avoids talking about feelings VS By the end of the story he goes in every evening to talk with Brady about how he is feeling. In the beginning of the story he thinks the government is wrong to regulate the watermen’s ability to harvest crabs. VS By the end of the story he believes regulations are needed to preserve the bay. In the beginning of the story he doesn’t like the DiAngelos because they are new and have money. He doesn’t want to get to know them. VS Once they start eating, Tom begins to enjoy himself and share stories. He decides he likes the DiAngelos after all.

Preparing for the 5 paragraph essay….. In your groups discuss the characters from Red Kayak. Determine 3 ways in which these characters are dynamic. On your paper list the character’s name and the three changes that occur in the novel which prove the Character Is dynamic.

# 1 TOPICAL: CLAIM #1 – TOPIC CLAIM #2 – TOPIC CLAIM #3 - TOPIC # 2 CHRONOLOGICAL : BODY PARAGRAPH #1 FOR THE BEGINNING OF THE NOVEL BODY PARAGRAPH #2 FOR THE MIDDLE OF THE NOVEL BODY PARAGRAPH #3 FOR THE END OF THE NOVEL

3 changes in Tom Parks: WRITE YOUR HEADING ON A CLEAN SHEET OF PAPER On the front of your paper create an ESSAY CLUSTER MAP starting with the simple thesis: In the novel, Red Kayak by Priscilla Cummings, _________________________ is a dynamic character. Highlight the claims, warrants and evidence on your cluster map appropriately.

3 changes in Tom Parks: On the BACK of your paper create a 2nd ESSAY CLUSTER MAP starting with the simple thesis: In the novel, Red Kayak by Priscilla Cummings, _________________________ is a dynamic character. Highlight the claims, warrants and evidence on your cluster map appropriately.

Your Simple Thesis: must argue a character is dynamic To answer the assigned prompt correctly.. Each paragraph claim must state that the character has changed in that paragraph’s topic area. Points of Evidence prove the warrant

Block A = completed slide 6 – many are still on first cluster map Block B = completed slide 7 – many are ready to move on to t-charts Block c = completed slide 6 - It was during this block that slide #8 was created as students struggled with the different levels of the argument.
