Works Cited Page On its own page at the very end Keep running page number in top right hand corner Title: “Works Cited” centered Sources left-aligned Sources listed in alphabetical order If a source is longer than one line, every line besides the first gets indented Example: Fern, Ashley. "Why Youth Is Wasted On The Young.“ Elite Daily. N.p., 30 July Web. 03 Dec

Internal Citations The first word in the works cited entry should appear in parentheses Goes at the end of the sentence that includes specific evidence After you are done quoting/paraphrasing the book, before you start explaining in your own words Period comes way at the end, after the internal citation Source 1: (de Saint Exupery #) 2: (Fern) 3: (Collins) 4 left: (Zachary) 4 right: (Spreads Joy Spreads Weeds)

Introduction General sentence/statement about life that anyone can relate to As we get older, our perceptions of things change. Transition into our specific question/topic The experience we gain with age allows us to see the world as it really is. In a few words, list (“hint at”) the three reasons you will include. Do NOT name the specific sources yet. We come to understand difficult concepts like love, we make wiser decisions, and we see both the positive and negative things that life has to offer. State your thesis/claim Because experience is the only way to come to understand all of these things, adults understand the world more clearly than children.

Introduction: Other Reminders Do NOT name the specific sources/authors just yet (save it for the body paragraphs) List the general reasons you pull from these sources, not specific facts (save those for the body paragraphs) EX: You would say “children are better at using their imaginations” NOT “The Little Prince was able to understand the drawing of the boa constrictor” Explicitly state your thesis (this should be your last sentence) 3-4 sentences in total

Body Paragraph Topic Sentence: Introduce the reason that this source will provide Abstract concepts, such as love, are mysteries to us until we experience them for ourselves. Introduce source/evidence In the book “The Little Prince” by Antoine de Saint Exupery, a childlike character experiences the love and loss of his first romantic relationship. Quote evidence/paraphrase specific evidence from source After leaving his girlfriend over a few minor lies, the character is full of regret, claiming that he was “too young to know how to love her,” (de Saint Exupery 37). Include internal citation here! Need some kind of punctuation inside quotation marks Explain/warrant how this evidence helps proves your specific claim This character acknowledges that it was his immaturity and lack of experience that led him to react too harshly and leave his girlfriend. Maybe if he were older and wiser, he would have been able to react more rationally, perhaps talking it out instead of immediately breaking up with her. Re-state claim This example shows us that, because they have more life experiences, adults understand the world more clearly than children.

Body Paragraph: Other Reminders Introduce source before pulling information from it In the book “The Little Prince” by Antoine de Saint Exupery… In the article “Why Youth is Wasted on the Young” by Ashley Fern… In a study conducted by the University of Texas… In a drawing by artist Sammy Zachary… In an image entitled “Spreads Joy Spreads Weeds”… Include specific evidence (whether it is quoted or paraphrased) Include internal citations after the evidence ends and before your own analysis begins (comes at the END of the sentence) At least 5 sentences each (topic, introduce quote, quote, warrant, re-state claim)

Formatting Quotes/Evidence Paraphrased Children are more able to see beneath the surface, as illustrated through the title character in the book “The Little Prince” by Antoine de Saint Exupery. In this book, we meet an adult who uses a special drawing to determine whether or not an individual is capable of “true understanding,” (de Saint Exupery 5). All the adults that he meets fail the test and only see the image at a surface level. It is not until he meets a childlike little alien that someone finally understands the true, deeper meaning of his drawing (de Saint Exupery 3-9). Directly Quoted After meeting countless adults who do not understanding the true meaning of his drawing, the narrator is astonished when The Little Prince replies “no, no, no! I do not want an elephant inside a boa constrictor,” (de Saint Exupery 8-9).

Formatting Quotes: Other Reminders Only direct WORD-FOR-WORD quotations belong in quotation marks. If you are paraphrasing, then your words should NOT be in quotation marks. “Never leave a quotation hanging at the end. Always include some punctuation inside the last quotation mark. The period will go after the internal citation at the end,” (Like this).

Rebuttal Paragraph Acknowledge the opposition There are some ways that children seem to have a more meaningful understanding of the world than adults do. Provide a valid reason that supports the opposition and explain it For example, children are much more imaginative. Adults tend to lose this playful, creative aspect of themselves as they age. It would seem that if they are closed off to a whole part of themselves, then they are not experiencing the world very clearly. Defend yourself against this specific point However, imagination and creativity are only in our heads. Not being in touch with something inside our minds does not mean we are not in touch with the world around us. As a matter of fact, the less time we spend daydreaming, the more involved we are with reality. Re-state claim Therefore, even though adults are not using their imaginations as often, they still have a clearer understanding of the world.

Rebuttal Paragraph: Other Reminders Do NOT need specific evidence/citations for this paragraph At least 4 sentences

Conclusion Paragraph Re-state claim/thesis It is clear that adults have a better understanding of the world. Generally mention three sources & the three reasons that you pulled from these sources We have examined a novella, a psychological study, and a digital image that all support the fact that adults’ experience helps them to understand abstract concepts, make wise decisions, and weigh both the positive and negative consequences of a situation. Close with a general/relatable statement about life Perhaps it is not until we let go of some of our childlike dreams that we are able to truly understand the real world around us.

Conclusion Paragraph: Other Reminders No specific evidence/quotes/citations 3-4 sentences Explicitly state your claim in the first sentence
