Level 2 Unit 2 Investigating Engineering Design Engineering Diploma Level 2 Unit 2 Investigating Engineering Design In this unit you will find out how products function by dismantling and reassembling them. You will also be looking at the overall design process and how it begins with a design brief from a customer. You will investigate the issues and constraints that influence product design and whether a proposal should be developed into a final solution suitable for manufacture. You will then examine the ways in which a final design solution is prepared and presented.
Level 2 Unit 2 Investigating Engineering Design L2 U2 Learning Outcomes: Know about the construction and function of an engineered product or system Be able to prepare a product design specification Be able to prepare initial design proposals Be able to prepare and submit a final design solution Next >
Level 2 Unit 2 Investigating Engineering Design The engineering theme for this module will be based around transportation technology You will asked to design a mass transit system for an airport A large part of this unit will involve looking at how the process of design is carried out You will have to create a design brief, a design specification, generate ideas and put forward a proposal for your chosen solution Engineering Theme: Next >
Level 2 Unit 2 Investigating Engineering Design Principles of Design: The design process is followed whenever engineers need to design a product or a system Design is used in all engineering areas to produce useful products and systems: Automotive Consumer electronics Transportation Medical Production Construction Next >
Level 2 Unit 2 Investigating Engineering Design Task 1 Your report must cover the following: ■ Describe the construction of the engineered product or system ■ Describe the function of the engineered product or system ■ Describe how the product or system works. This could include flow charts, circuit diagrams, freehand sketches, etc ■ Evaluate the performance of the product or system and discuss its fitness for purpose in terms of ergonomics, efficiency and reliability Next > Choose an engineered product or system that you have investigated and write a short report
Level 2 Unit 2 Investigating Engineering Design The brief is based on a transportation system ■ Identify the physical constraints of the engineered system ■ Identify the performance requirements of the engineered system ■ Identify the reliability indicators of the engineered system ■ Produce a product design specification which includes: ■ Dimensional constraints ■ Functional requirements ■ Required operating performance parameters ■ Economic and manufacturing considerations Next > Task 2 You will be given a design brief by your tutor and you have to turn this into a detailed design specification
Level 2 Unit 2 Investigating Engineering Design Task 3 1.Produce three different initial design proposals 2.Choose a final proposal and explain your selection, considering the requirements of the specification 3.Submit a final design solution. This should include sketches, drawings and where appropriate, circuit diagrams and/or flow diagrams 4.Carry out a reasoned comparison of the three proposals. The comparison should include objective testing 5.Produce a final design report. This can be either a detailed written design report or a presentation including a design log and mathematical and scientific calculations. The report should be well presented and easy to follow 6.Deliver a presentation of the final design solution. The presentation, which could be delivered using PowerPoint or a similar program, should include the use of models (which could be CAD generated) and software simulations of the design solution End > The specification is based on a transportation system You will be given a design specification and will need to prepare initial design proposals and a final design solution
