what is the WIS?

The WIS is... the realization of a comprehensive workforce information system.

The WIS is... an interactive infrastructure that ties together various state and national applications.

The WIS is... an integrated system containing many different programs.

The WIS is... Your window to quality information about various employment & training opportunities.

an individual effort but a collaborative one. The WIS isn’t...

The WIS is... Your One-Stop System for state, local and national workforce information.

The WIS is... a new way of total customer service thinking.

a single program but a multi- faceted system. The WIS isn’t...

One magic website or a magic formula. Nor is it a giant “national” DataBase.

just about jobs or people or places … it’s about ALL those things! The WIS isn’t...

housed in a single central site. It’s a network of many sites across America The WIS isn’t...

all that hard to understand. The WIS isn’t...

Why do we need the WIS ?

Jobseekers and employers share a common frustration in finding reliable information about jobs, training, and workforce demographics.

WIS streamlines and integrates the maze of programs that serve the employment and training needs of Americans.

WIS serves as the foundation for the information delivery system which supports the One-Stop Career Center System mandated by the Workforce Investment Act.

What’s included in the WIS ?

Many programs contained in the WIS were constructed by USDOL, Employment & Training Administration (ETA), with input from the states.

The WIS Includes … A National Listing of Job Opportunities

The WIS Includes … America’s Talent Bank A place for job seekers to post their resumes

The WIS Includes … A Valuable Career Exploration Tool

These programs were created by USDOL, ETA and are maintained by them. But employers and job seekers can enter records directly into these DataBases.

The WIS Includes … For Career Exploration & Skills Matching

The WIS Includes … For Local Workforce Boards and Partners

Employer DataBases The WIS Includes … To help locate job opportunities

Media Library of Occupations The WIS Includes …

(which is where most of the workforce information is stored!) The WIS Also Includes the …

Tell me more about the ALMIS DataBase...

The ALMIS DataBase is constructed and operates a little differently from other WIS programs.

The ALMIS DataBase is a standardized storage system for computer files related to LMI.

The ALMIS DataBase acts as an organizing unit.

A consortium of states designed the structure and layout from which each state can build their DataBase.

States construct their systems and design their file layouts based on the ALMIS standards.

an option but rather a requirement. All states will use the same file structure. The ALMIS Database isn’t...

Certain data files are mandatory for all states.

States can also add additional data files as they wish to suit state needs.

States are responsible for populating all the data files

States are also responsible for updating files as new data becomes available.

States operate their own servers in their own offices to handle their own data.

Links to other states provide virtually seamless interaction between states who wish to share their workforce information.

The ALMIS DataBase will be the cornerstone for workforce information.

The ALMIS DataBase will be a vital part of implementation of the Workforce Investment Act.

What kind of info will be included in the ALMIS DataBase?

Long & Short-term Projections by Industry & Occupation

Employment & Wages by Industry for States and Metropolitan Areas.

Local Area Labor Force & Unemployment Statistics

Population Estimates

Occupational Staffing Patterns by Industry

Lists of Training Providers by Occupation & Location

Number of Training Completers by Type and Institution

SOUNDS GREAT!!

When will the WIS & all these ALMIS DataBases be operational?

In general, by July 1, 2000 at the latest.

Some states are further along than others and may have data available sooner.

The WIS can be accessed through each state’s website. Check your state’s website to see where you stand!

SOUNDS GREAT!!

Tell me...

Where can I go for more information?

Start with your state’s workforce information shop! Usually housed in DOL or equivalent.

Or…. check out these websites for more information:

WIS is... the wave of the future.
