Canvas and New Semesters What’s the timeline? About 1 month prior; 120 days after a class ends, its Canvas course is archived.

Canvas course creation If you are looking for a Canvas course, there are 3 factors to consider:  1.the section must have “active” status  2.the section must belong to a semester that is active in Canvas  3.enough time must have elapsed for the automatic update process to run and generate the Canvas course.

Canvas course creation and class cancellations: 2 common scenarios  a class is cancelled and rebuilt with a new SYN number  a class is cancelled and new independent study sections are built, each with a new SYN number

What happens in these 2 common scenarios after a class is cancelled? New section with a new SYN#  The original Canvas course is frozen and unusable. A new Canvas course is built for the new SYN number. No materials are transferred from the original course by Canvas; the instructor must do that manually. The official instructor and anyone who registers for the new SYN numbered class is added to the new Canvas course as usual. New Independent Study Classes  The original Canvas course is frozen and unusable. No materials are transferred out of the original course by Canvas; the instructor must do that manually. A new Canvas course is built for each new SYN number: often that means that the instructor and just one student are in a Canvas course together, and the instructor has a bunch of Canvas courses with just one student in them – one Canvas course for each independent study section with a unique SYN number. We suggest that the instructor consider cross-listing to simplify course management
