Argument Paragraph Includes Debatable claim. First piece of evidence. Second piece of evidence. Third piece of evidence. Restating debatable claim. **Paragraph should include 3 different types of evidence. One of these should be from a credible online source. For the evidence they find online, they need to include an in-text citation. Student should write the source in a works cited entry format after their paragraph as well (shown in slide 4).

Types of Evidence Types of evidence: #1 Personal experience – any actual experience with the topic that you, your family and friends have had. #2 Reasons – logical reasons that support the opinions made in the claim. #3 Confirmed facts – facts that have been found in reliable/credible sources. #4 Statistics – numbers and percentages that are relevant to the topic and come from reliable/credible sources. #5 Research by experts – research that is done by professors, researchers, or doctors who have a deep knowledge of the topic; always found in credible/reliable sources. **Last 3 types of evidence should come from a credible online source**

Example Argument Paragraph Students should get less homework because they do not get enough sleep each night. When I was in school, I used to stay up late doing homework. I always had a hard time staying awake and concentrating in school the next day. There are many students who participate in sports or other activities after school. The students have to go to practice and then come home and do their homework. Many times they don’t finish it, or they get very little sleep. “57% of middle school students get between 4-5 hours of sleep each night. The recommended amount is 7-8 hours nightly,” ( This evidence supports why students should get less homework each night.

Argument Paragraph Revision CONTENT: Claim- Underline your claim. Make sure it’s debatable (not a fact; a statement that that can be argued about). Does you claim reflect what you’re actually arguing for in your paragraph? Evidence- Ask yourself: is this the best evidence to use to prove your argument? Is there a variety of evidence—reasons, facts, personal experience, statistics, and expert research? Did you cite all your evidence from secondary sources correctly? ORGANIZATION: Flow of Argument- Ask yourself— is my claim at the beginning of the paragraph? Ask yourself—is this the best order for my evidence? Experiment with re-organizing your evidence. What does this do to the flow and logic of your argument? Does it make more sense now?

Editing Writers closely edit their pieces to make them error-free and easy for the reader to read.  Edit your paragraphs for grammar concepts.  Next, switch papers with another student who will edit your paragraph as well.

Due… This assignment concludes our 2 nd writing unit. Students have had the allotted class time, as well as use of Ipads for research throughout this unit. Any students who were behind on their work were told throughout the unit to bring their writing home to work on as well. The students’ argument paragraphs are expected to be turned in on Monday 11/23.
