TYPES OF ANIMALS

 There are two types of animals:  Invertebrates  Vertebrates

INVERTEBRATES  Animals without a Backbone or Spinal Column Protozoa Protozoa (phyla: protozoa) Arthropods Arthropods such as crabs, spiders and insects (phyla: Arthropoda) Echinoderms Echinoderms such as starfish (phyla: Echinodermata) Crustaceans Crustaceans such as crabs (subphyla: Crustacea) Annelids Annelids such as earthworms (phyla: Annelida) Arachnids Arachnids such as spiders (subphyla: Chelicerata class: Arachnida) Mollusks Mollusks such as octopus (phyla: Mollusca) Insects Insects (subphyla: Uniramia class: Insecta)

VERTEBRATES  Animals with a Backbone or Spinal Column: (All these animals are in the phyla Chordata and the subphyla Vertebrata.) Marsupials Marsupials such as kangaroos (order: Marsupialia) Fish Fish (group: Pisces) Primates Primates such as gorillas and chimpanzees (order: Primates) Amphibians Amphibians such as frogs (class: Amphibia) Rodents Rodents such as mice (order: Rodentia) Reptiles Reptiles such as crocodiles (class: Reptilia) Cetaceans Cetaceans such as whales and dolphins ( order: Cetacea) Birds Birds (class: Aves) Animals such as seals Animals such as seals (order: Carnivora family: Phocidae) Mammals Mammals (class: Mammalia)

ASSIGNMENT  Now is your chance to explore.  Find a book of an animal you are interested about.  Write a paragraph about the animal including if it is an invertebrate or a vertebrate.  Draw a picture of your animal to go along with your paragraph.
