Presentation transcript:

Where have you heard this word before? What are some examples you can think of? What is Balance?

a Teeter-totter or a scale Is Balanced when Weight is even on both sides… A BaLance Beam forces you to keep your weight even so you don’t fall off.

Balance Means: KEEPING WEIGHT EVEN

In Art There is an Idea Called “VISUAL WEIGHT”. The more “visual weight” something has, the more it ‘attracts’ your eye. This means you notice it more than other things in the picture. DO YOU SEE VISUAL WEIGHT IN THESE PICTURES?

Visual Weight can be created using: Colour Empty Spaces Size Contrast Variety movement

For example: Dark colors ‘weigh’ more visually than light colors.

Visual Balance is like physical Balance because it is about “keeping weight even”, only this time it means visual weight!

There are several ways to create VISUAL BALANCE :

Symmetrical Balance Both sides of an imaginary line are the same: like looking in a mirror.

Asymmetrical Balance Each side of the imaginary line is different but each has the same visual weight.

Elements radiate out from the center creating a focal point. Radial Balance

Crystallographic Balance There is the same visual weight spread out over the entire area - like in a pattern.

VISUAL BALANCE is the even use of visual weight. By carefully placing the different parts of a picture we can make a Balanced composition. DO YOU THINK THE FOLLOWING ARTWORKS ARE BALANCED?…

Chinese Paper Cutting Double Happiness, Jiao Brothers

Jackson Pollock – Cathedral (1947)

Rose Window - Susan Wagner

Composition VIII - Wassily Kandinsky (1923)

Can you find different examples of BalAnce and symmetry in this room? Symmetrical Balance Asymmetrical Balance Radial Balance Crystallographic Balance Remember the four kinds of balance:
