ELEMENTS ARE HOW WE SEE AND ORGANIZE THE WORLD…PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN FOCUS ON HOW WE ORGANIZE THOSE ELEMENTS. Principles of Design vs Elements of Design

Balance There are 3 kinds of balance…what are they?

What is the difference: Formal Informal Be able to compare & contrast/give examples How is this image both informal and formal balance? Hint remember which of the three types of symmetry are formal, and which two are informal.

How is this an example of informal balance?

What is proportion? How is proportion important in either picture? How is emphasis linked to proportion?

Pattern and Rhythm Remember: Pattern is simply repeating a design over and over again in a composition. Rhythm is the movement or variation of a pattern due to how they are placed.

RHYTHM Visual rhythm develops when there is sufficient repetition of lines, shapes, or colors to produce movement. It produces a visual energy in the photograph. A row of trees also represents rhythm from a structural point of view.

Principles: VARIETY How is Variety is closely linked to Pattern and Rhythm? What elements are changed in this picture to create variety? What elements create pattern? HINT: remember your elements are Line, Shape, Form, Space, Texture, Colour

Principles: Variety We saw this example used to illustrate pattern, but it is also an example of variety…the question is HOW?

Movement There are two kinds? What are they? These two images are an example of one kind of movement…hint: it has to do with your eyes!

Principles: UNITY Unity is the underlying principle that summarizes all of the principles and elements of design. It refers to the coherence of the whole. It is the sense that all of the parts are working together to achieve a common result; a harmony of all the parts.

Unity However, unity also exists in variety. It is not necessary for all of the elements to be identical in form providing they have a common quality of meaning or style. For example, compositions that are rendered in the same style (i.e. realistic, abstract) consistently can be unified.

Principles of Design Balance (the biggie) Symmetrical Asymmetrical Radial Proportion (Emphasis) Pattern – repeating a design over and over Rhythm – the movement of that pattern Variety – changing or manipulating the objects/elements of an image Movement – leading the viewer’s eye, literal or suggested motion in a picture Unity – the cohesiveness of the whole
