“On the Move: Next Stop Labour Market” A project implemented within the framework of the European Initiative Equal PENELOPE STATHAKOPOULOS Psychologist – Career Counselor D.P. President The Project is co-funded by the European Social Fund (75%) and the Hellenic Ministry of Employment and Social Protection (25%).

What is the project “On the Move” It addresses young people dropping out of secondary education without qualifications The project experimenting with new methods and practices friendly to young people, aims at enabling youngsters to manage their life and career & integrate into the labor market.

CAREER GUIDANCE STRUCTURES The provision of high quality career guidance services giving emphasis, among other things, to the combat of gender stereotypes  Existing guidance structures are reinforced in order to provide guidance services to young drop outs.  They are located:  3 structures in Athens  1 structure in Thrace-Alexandroupolis

Services Provided to young people 1. CAREER GUIDANCE  Individual career guidance assisted by a specially designed computer programme  Information about occupations as well as training and labor market opportunities

2. Mobile Unit of Career Guidance The development and functioning of a mobile unit of Information and Career guidance  A fully equipped bus on which career advisors provide information and career guidance to young drop outs  Given that our country consists of small and isolated communities this Unit can prove to be a very important tool. 3. EMPOWERMENT WORKSHOPS The equipment of youngsters with social and basic skills through the experimentation with new empowerment practices  Content of the workshops Oral and written communication Every day life and arithmetic Computer skills Assignment of projects Career management Equal opportunities – Assertiveness  Procedure Choice, flexibility, active learning

Services Provided to young people 4. TRAINING PROGRAMMES The equipment of young people with vocational skills, promoting, at the same time equal opportunities between genders  Training Content Logistics Cooking (2 programmes) Office tasks with the use of computers Waiters

Services Provided to young people 5. ACQUIRING WORK EXPERIENCE The acquisition of work experience as well as vocational skills  Content 1.Information and sensitization of enterprises in order to provide employment opportunities 2. Work placement of 80 youngsters for two months on the basis of the matching of their wishes and interests with employment opportunities 3.Supporting young people during their internship in the enterprises

MAIN ACTIONS OF THE PROJECT 6. JOB PLACEMENT  Purpose Placing youngsters to jobs on the basis of the matching of their wishes and interests with employment opportunities  Implementation  Sensitizing enterprises in order to offer employment opportunities  Supporting/guiding young people in order to have a ‘soft’ transition to the labor market  Negotiating with companies who had offered internship to young people

7. The Contribution of Volunteers The whole project was enriched by the participation of young volunteers who belonged to the same age group with the young drop outs. They were trained and supervised by experts in order to be able to communicate effectively with the target group. Their tasks consisted of:  supporting and encouraging the young drop outs (peer counseling)  acting as role models for the young drop outs  providing, through the Committee of Young People, feedback to the pilot group with respect to the project’s course and the young drop outs needs  sensitizing the local community Services Provided to young people

Results  Provision of career guidance to 494 young drop outs  54 young drop outs participated in 4 empowerment workshops in Attica and Thrace  98 young drop outs attended training programmes  71 young drop outs have been placed in companies within the context of Acquiring Work Experience  The Mobile Unit of Career Guidance visited 14 local communities

RESULTS At the Level of Local Community  Information about the services and the opportunities provided for the benefit of young drop outs: Social Services and Guidance Centres Educational community Employment Structures Local Enterprises Network Initiatives taken for coping with the problem of dropping out of school, for empowering young people and integrate them into the labor market.
