LS1 Day EN-CV M. Nonis on behalf of CV group / CERN

Contents Introduction Projects for LS1 – PS and Meyrin site – LHC and Experiments – SPS – North Area Overview on maintenance Operation 2 M. Nonis - LS1 Day

Preamble The object of this presentation is to show what will be done by CV Group during LS1 with respect to the requests received and consolidation needs; the focus is made mainly in the projects that cannot be performed during LS1. In addition, some activities (projects, maintenance) that have a major impact in the availability of circuits will be mentioned in order to allow everyone to have the full picture of the constraints to face in LS1. The presentation is divided in geographical zones, almost corresponding to the different machines complex. In this talk we take into account requests created in Plan.cern until Wednesday 5 th June; later ones are not included and not accepted at today. 3 M. Nonis - LS1 Day I n t r o d u c t i o n

Terms and Definitions When is LS1 for CV? In order to be able to allow the cool down of LHC and the powering tests, the LS1 for CV Group is from January to December We are requested that in 2014, all plants linked to the run of any accelerator shall be operational, only maintenance work will be allowed in view to minimize the time without maintenance until December M. Nonis - LS1 Day I n t r o d u c t i o n

Other figures New major supply & installation contracts: 26 Massive use of existing contracts: > 50 orders – Number of additional contractors’ staff depends on final dates of maintenance interventions but it can’t be considered unlimited (supervision work for CERN, need to know circuits before working on them). 6

General Organization CV External help from INFN for engineering activities? – Ok on some projects – not on any – Time is (almost) late, decision is more than urgent. During LS1 all possible resources will be moved from operation activity to work supervision. However, the maintenance workload will increase. Operation requests: most of the dates are not defined so that we cannot confirm whether they can be satisfied according to installation availability, or if they cumulate at the same period and represent a too high workload. It will not be possible to cumulate the workload for projects and maintenance (and operation) in the same period, therefore maintenance work must be distributed all along the 12 months of This implies that maintenance will not be limited to the very first few months of M. Test & Commissioning Given the quantity of CV systems concerned and the important modifications to be performed, the test & commissioning of each CV plant will be a major activity requiring several days per plant. In addition, each equipment Group will need to test & commission his equipment before considering his work completed. During each of these steps the effort required to CV team is not negligible (drain, fill up, balancing of circuits…) and, only after their successful completion, CERN can enter the commissioning phase of each accelerator. I am convinced that all this should not be under evaluated. 9 M. Nonis - LS1 Day I n t r o d u c t i o n

LINAC 4 HVAC plant is completed July 2012 Cooling plant is completed September 2012 The decision of delaying the commissioning phase of L4 of 1 year does not have an effect on the CV installation work; however it will avoid clashes between operational needs for L4 and CV maintenance/project work during M. Maintenance Planning for LHC Experiments ATLAS: June to September 2013 ALICE: June to September 2013 CMS: November 2012 to January 2013 LHCb: January to April 2013 M. Nonis - LS1 Day Maintenance

Functional Tests CV needs to perform functional tests in order to ensure the functionality of the installations during operation: – Safety tests or back up; – Valves manipulation (e.g: in concrete floor); – Degraded mode scenario (ventilation systems); During maintenance and tests, the availability of CV services shall be affected and/or stopped. Estimated 1-2 days per Point 37 M. Nonis - LS1 Day Maintenance

REQUESTS FOR OPERATION OF CV SYSTEMS IN 2013 M. Nonis - LS1 Day

CV Services Available during LS1 CV will ensure only essential services: – Ventilation of underground and surface premises (tunnel, experimental areas, buildings…) but not the ones dedicated to specific equipment. – Chilled water only for ventilation purposes – Compressed air – Raising systems – Drinking water supplies – Fire hydrants network Temporary stop of these installations might take place according to modification work or maintenance interventions to be performed. Operation 39 M. Nonis - LS1 Day

Operation 2013 Requests received have not enough details: “need water for 130 weeks from December 2012”. Received requests (full list): PS LINAC 2, 3 and 4 CTF3 Cloud ISR area AD RF (mainly SPS) CAST CMS, LHCb These requests can be satisfied provided that they do not clash with the planning for projects and maintenance. Requests 2014 are ok: maintenance interventions will be adapted accordingly. 40 M. Nonis - LS1 Day Operation

Conclusions M. Nonis - LS1 Day Still lot of details have to be defined. Present situation is tight but CV is confident we can succeed. What we do not know is whether the picture we have is complete or someone has still to show up and formulate additional requests. This is the most sensible and urgent point: CV has to evaluate, launch or complete the studies now, there is no possibility to change direction in a few weeks.

Thank you for your attention Questions? 42 M. Nonis - LS1 Day
